Black cohosh is a plant rhizome (underground stem) that can be taken orally either directly in powder form or as a tablet or liquid. The plant rhizome does not contain phytoestrogens, which may be responsible for its purported estrogen-like effects, but it does contain small amounts of anti-inflammatory compounds, including salicylic acid.
Claimed positive effects of black cohosh
Black cohosh is considered useful for menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, mood swings, tachycardia, vaginal dryness) and for arthralgia or osteoarthritis.
