The Claimed Effect of Saw Palmetto

A compelling case for the plant's beneficial properties is its use in treating symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. There is no evidence that the drug completely cures hyperplasia. The mechanism is unknown, but may be related to inhibition of testosterone conversion to dihydrotestosterone. The dose is 320 mg once daily or 160 mg twice daily.

Adverse Effects of Saw Palmetto

Headache and diarrhea may occur, but no other serious adverse effects have been reported. Saw palmetto may interact with estrogens.
