The stated effect of hydrastis
Goldenseal is used as an antiseptic gargle for mouth sores, eye inflammation, and skin irritations, and as a wash for vaginal infections. It is mixed with echinacea to make a cold remedy, but goldenseal has not been proven to be effective as a cold remedy. Goldenseal is also used to treat upset stomach and diarrhea. In two relatively well-designed studies, berberine, an extract from goldenseal, reduced symptoms of diarrhea.
Adverse effects of goldenseal
Goldenseal can have many adverse effects, including nausea, anxiety, upset stomach, uterine contractions, jaundice in newborns, and worsening of hypertension. If large amounts are taken, goldenseal can cause seizures and respiratory arrest and can affect heart contractions. Goldenseal can interact with warfarin. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, newborns, and people with epilepsy or blood clotting problems should not take goldenseal. The anticoagulant effect of heparin may be reduced by berberine.
