Hair removal cream is the most popular chemical means of getting rid of unwanted hair on the body. This product, invented in 1940, has won the trust of both women and the strong half of humanity due to the painlessness of the procedure compared to mechanical removal (epilators), long-lasting effect (unlike shaving with a razor) and affordability.
Types of Hair Removal Creams
As mentioned earlier, today hair removal creams have different compositions, which are designed for different skin types and hair hardness. The price of hair removal cream varies depending on its composition and brand:
- Facial hair removal cream – has the most gentle and soft composition: Eveline “Ultra-gentle” (about 20 UAH), Veet “For sensitive skin” (46-50 UAH),
- Hair removal cream for men. Men's hair is often thicker and coarser than women's, so some brands produce a special men's line of hair removal products: Cliven Young (48 UAH), Veet "For MAN" (150 UAH)
- Hair removal cream for bikini area: Caramel (about 25 UAH), Tanita (23 UAH)
- Cream for hair removal on legs and in the armpit area: VELVET SKIN (about 30 UAH), Hair Away (230 UAH), Veet SPA Aloe Vera (85 UAH), Opilca (Belgium, 40 UAH)
But, despite the high efficiency of depilatory cream, the opinion that it can get rid of unwanted hair forever is wrong. The fact is that the cream destroys only the visible part of the hair and does not affect its bulb in any way.
Another myth about depilatory creams is the opinion that after using such products, hair becomes harder and grows faster. In fact, if the hair does not become softer and lighter, as the manufacturer promises, then its structure does not change for sure.
How does hair removal cream work?
Hair removal cream has an impressive chemical composition, which is aimed at destroying the hair structure, and has a high pH level, which makes the dissolution of the hair more effective. Sodium, keratin, potassium or calcium thioglycolate, which are often the main components of the cream, soften the hair in a few minutes to such an extent that its visible part can be easily removed from the skin surface.
In areas treated with the cream, hair does not grow for several days, and sometimes for several weeks.
The principle of using depilatory cream is very simple:
- Preparing the skin (steaming).
- Applying the cream (from 3 to 15 minutes depending on its type).
- Removing damaged hair using a soft cloth or a special scraper.
It is worth noting that, despite the promises of manufacturers, hair removal cream should be used with caution, since even the most harmless depilatory contains a large number of chemical components that can provoke an allergic reaction.
The day before the hair removal cream procedure, you need to test the product on a small area of skin with hair and monitor its reaction. If the skin turns red, there is a burning or itching sensation - this cream is not suitable for you.
Don't make general conclusions about creams based on just one brand. Test each new depilatory cream.
Pay attention to the composition (it may contain components that you are intolerant to), the expiration date and instructions for using the cream.
Remember that the areas of skin on which the depilation procedure was performed should not be exposed to direct sunlight for the next 24 hours - this can cause damage and burns to the skin.
Contraindications to the use of hair removal cream
Reviews of hair removal creams vary: some use them constantly, while others prefer other methods of depilation due to the incorrect selection of the product and, consequently, unpleasant consequences.
Like any product that has a chemical composition, hair removal cream has a number of contraindications for use:
- Dermatological (skin) diseases.
- Damage to the skin.
- Oncological formations: malignant and benign (fibromas, moles).
- Pregnancy.
- Individual intolerance to the components of the cream.
Hair removal cream is a popular and versatile remedy for fighting unwanted hair on the body, which has a number of advantages: ease of use, availability, painlessness of the depilation procedure, convenient use in hard-to-reach places and a fairly long-lasting effect.
How to choose the best hair removal cream?
Today, hair removal cream (or depilatory cream) has been improved so much that, depending on its composition and purpose, everyone can choose the ideal product for themselves.
New generation depilatory creams are divided into several types:
- Universal creams (suitable for any skin type and area).
- Creams for delicate skin (for bikini area and face).
- Creams for coarse hair (legs, underarms).
- Hypoallergenic creams (for those with hypersensitive, allergy-prone skin).
In addition, almost every brand that produces hair removal cream includes caring components (oils, plant extracts, vitamins) that moisturize and soften the skin after the depilation procedure. In addition to creams, manufacturers also launch a line of mousses, powders and gels for hair removal.
