Belching during pregnancy is a normal phenomenon that accompanies the process of bearing a child. Belching is a sharp and unexpected release of gases from the oral cavity.
Sometimes belching is accompanied by the presence of unpleasant odors from the mouth or manifests itself in the form of a return of gases from the stomach to the esophagus with a sour taste. Belching can occur both at home and in a crowded place, which not only worsens the well-being of the pregnant woman, but also leads to her psychological state being uncomfortable. Future mothers begin to worry about not looking good in front of other people, and they also become anxious about their own health deteriorating.
Of course, the symptoms of belching are not pleasant for the expectant mother, but it is necessary to be calm and patient in order to normally endure all the changes that occur with a pregnant woman. There is no need to worry about the presence of belching, since the symptoms that appear are not signs of a gastrointestinal tract disease. In the body of a pregnant woman, there is some disruption in the functioning of the digestive system, which has a reversible process. After childbirth, as a rule, all the symptoms that bother the pregnant woman disappear without a trace. It should also be noted that the manifestations of belching are in no way dangerous to the health of the woman and her baby.
Of course, during the period of bearing a baby, if a woman is bothered by discomfort in the form of belching, it is necessary to take certain measures to alleviate the condition of the expectant mother. The methods that will help alleviate belching during pregnancy will be discussed below in the relevant sections.
Causes of belching during pregnancy
The reasons for belching during pregnancy, according to experts, are the following:
- Changes in hormonal levels during pregnancy, when some hormones begin to be secreted in large quantities, while others practically cease to be produced. For example, a lot of progesterone is produced in the body of pregnant women, which has some effect on the digestive process. Due to increased production of progesterone in the digestive tract, digestion begins to slow down, and gases are formed, which cause belching.
- Hormonal changes also cause a decrease in muscle tone throughout the body, as well as the valves of the digestive tract. Due to the fact that the valve between the stomach and the esophagus is not tightly closed, it can open for various reasons and pass the contents of the stomach into the esophagus. As a result of such actions, symptoms of belching occur.
- Hormonal changes also affect some temporary disturbances in the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. It is responsible for regulating the activity of many body systems, including the digestive tract.
- In the third trimester of pregnancy, belching is felt more strongly, since the uterus, which is growing many times, exerts constant pressure on the organs of the gastrointestinal tract. The stomach of the expectant mother gradually changes its position. Due to this reason, an increase in the accumulation of gases is observed in the stomach of a pregnant woman, compared to previous periods of pregnancy. Therefore, the appearance of strong and constant belching is a frequent accompaniment to the time before childbirth.
- Eating disorders can also contribute to belching. If you talk while eating, air can enter the digestive tract and then come out, causing belching.
- Poor chewing of food, speed of absorption of food are also the reasons for belching. Food must be chewed long and thoroughly, since it is digested and assimilated already in the oral cavity. For this purpose, food is processed by saliva in the mouth and is well ground, which facilitates the digestion processes in the stomach and intestines. But if food enters the stomach in large pieces, without the necessary preliminary processing, then such a violation of the physiology of nutrition usually causes belching. Food that is not completely digested begins to release gases during processing and stretch the walls of the stomach.
- Various inappropriate positions during meals can also cause belching. For example, belching occurs especially often in a lying position.
- It happens that a pregnant woman's position in a certain way provokes belching. For example, the habit of lying down and resting a little after eating in a horizontal position can cause belching, as can turning from side to side while lying down.
- It happens that bending over of a pregnant woman due to certain household needs can lead to belching. For example, the expectant mother needs to put on tights, or fasten shoes, or take some objects that are placed below. Such involuntary physical exercises can lead to the appearance of uncomfortable symptoms.
- Sorbitol is related to increased gas formation in the intestines, and therefore to the appearance of belching. This substance is a sweetener that is used in the production of a large number of sweets. Sweets also contain many different harmful additives that in pregnant women can cause not only belching, but also heartburn, bloating, flatulence, and so on.
- Drinking sweet carbonated drinks such as various lemonades, Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola can also cause belching. These drinks not only provoke belching, but also poison the pregnant woman's body with various harmful chemicals.
- Healthy foods such as cabbage, asparagus, legumes (peas, beans, lentils, beans, etc.), bananas and grapes also cause increased gas formation in the digestive tract.
- Eating sour berries and sour foods, fatty and spicy foods, fried, smoked and pickled foods leads to belching.
- Belching can occur as a result of eating large amounts of starchy foods, namely potatoes, pasta, baked goods (especially black bread), and oatmeal.
- Belching is also provoked by immoderate consumption by a pregnant woman of healthy vegetables and fruits containing sugar and fructose in large quantities. These products include artichokes, pears and onions.
- Exacerbations of chronic diseases during pregnancy also cause belching. This especially concerns problems with the digestive system - diseases of the stomach, intestines, liver, gall bladder, pancreas. It happens that before pregnancy, chronic diseases developed asymptomatically, but with the appearance of changes in the female body, signs of diseases suddenly manifested themselves. They can cause various functional disorders in the body, including provoking belching.
- Existing congenital anomalies in the structure of the gastrointestinal tract of a congenital nature, namely, a narrowed lumen of the stomach, a kink in the stomach, and so on.
Belching as a sign of pregnancy
Each person has his own, unique characteristics. For example, reactions to the same stimuli, the same events manifest themselves differently in different people. In the same way, pregnancy in each woman proceeds only according to her own unique scenario.
Belching, as a sign of pregnancy, can appear in the early stages of pregnancy - in the first trimester, and in the middle of the term - in the second trimester, and at the very end of pregnancy - in the third trimester. It is impossible to predict how pregnancy will go, especially the first one, for any particular woman.
In some cases, belching appears as the only sign of pregnancy. The expectant mother does not even suspect that she is expecting an addition to the family, but she experiences peculiar reactions to some dishes and products. Belching can occur as a result of eating exotic and spicy dishes, appear as a consequence of consuming fatty foods or smoked foods, bakery products and sweets. Even healthy vegetables and fruits, especially those that were previously favorites, can cause belching.
Therefore, it is safe to say that belching occurs as a result of certain stomach contents that fall back into the esophagus. As a result, the mucous membrane of the esophagus becomes irritated, which contributes to the release of gases that manifest as belching. Belching is gases that are released sharply and suddenly from the mouth. The process of gas formation that provokes belching can occur not only in the esophagus, but also in the stomach, when its mucous membrane is irritated. As a result, the accumulated gases penetrate the esophagus, and then are released from the mouth with unpleasant sensations.
Usually, belching appears together with other signs of pregnancy, and especially together with symptoms of changes in the functioning of the digestive system. The expectant mother, along with belching, begins to feel digestive disorders in the form of increased gas formation and belching, bloating and a feeling of fullness in the gastrointestinal tract, constipation, heartburn and nausea. The pregnant woman begins to feel uncomfortable in crowded places, since she often wants to release gases or burp air. It happens that something suddenly begins to rumble, tingle and move in the stomach, which causes not only discomfort, but also pain.
At these moments, you should not hold back, but release such unpleasant symptoms of pregnancy. Since holding back the gases that have formed can cause severe pain in the gastrointestinal tract. Of course, you need to do this in privacy, so as not to be ashamed of your own actions, and also not to embarrass other people.
Symptoms of belching during pregnancy
The symptoms of belching during pregnancy are as follows:
- A sudden release of air (gases) from the oral cavity, which is accompanied by the appearance of sound.
- A sharp contraction of the diaphragm when air is released from the mouth.
- Sometimes the release of gases is accompanied by the appearance of an unpleasant odor from the mouth, for example, the smell of rotten eggs.
- It happens that belching is accompanied by the appearance of a sour taste in the mouth.
Belching in early pregnancy
It happens that belching appears in the early stages of pregnancy, for example, in the first trimester. Such "innovations" occur under the influence of changes in the hormonal balance in the body of a pregnant woman. In the early stages, along with belching, flatulence and a feeling of distension, bloating in the abdomen appear.
During pregnancy, the amount of progesterone produced by the body increases, which helps the body control the course of pregnancy. The amount of progesterone produced in the body of the expectant mother is ten times greater than before pregnancy. This is facilitated by the initial production of the hormone by the corpus luteum of the fetus, and as the child develops, by the placenta.
Progesterone together with estrogen affect external and internal changes in the woman's body. They are responsible for the calm state of the pregnant woman, provide smooth and shiny hair, and soften and make the tissues and muscles of the expectant mother smoother. Changes in tissues and muscles affect the deterioration of the digestion of the pregnant woman, which is manifested in a slowdown in the digestion of food and the absorption of nutrients.
Such a measure is necessary because the mother's body requires an increased content of building material to maintain its well-being in an optimal mode, as well as to help the baby form and develop. Therefore, food is digested longer so that all substances can get from it into the body of the expectant mother.
Slow digestion leads to constipation and belching, which is further facilitated by softening of the muscles of the digestive tract. For example, softening of the sphincter between the esophagus and stomach leads to gases flowing back into the esophagus, which causes symptoms of belching. And increased gas formation in the gastrointestinal tract in the early stages of pregnancy is facilitated by an increase in the amount of time for food digestion, which occurs against the background of increased fermentation.
Belching during pregnancy
Belching is gases that are produced in the stomach and esophagus during digestive dysfunction. But it happens that during pregnancy, belching air is observed.
This type of belching occurs when there is an exciting or emotional conversation during a meal. A large amount of air enters the digestive tract along with the food. Moreover, during the conversation, the expectant mother does not care about the quality of chewing the food and swallows food in large pieces.
After such feasts, a pregnant woman may begin to experience belching in the form of a reverse release of air that she swallowed while talking during a meal. The air begins to come out suddenly and sharply, in large portions, during which the diaphragm contracts strongly and hiccups may subsequently appear.
In this case, you need to wait until all the air comes out and the belching stops. If the symptoms of belching air are accompanied by hiccups, you need to drink a full glass of water in one gulp.
Rotten Egg Burps During Pregnancy
In some cases, pregnant women experience belching accompanied by the release of unpleasant odors. For example, belching "rotten eggs" during pregnancy is a common occurrence.
The main reason for this type of belching is a pregnant woman's nutritional disorders. First of all, overeating contributes to the occurrence of unpleasant symptoms.
Also, existing toxicosis during pregnancy can cause a lot of unpleasant symptoms, including burping like “rotten eggs”.
Sometimes, more alarming reasons can serve as a reason for the occurrence of belching "rotten eggs". For example, the appearance of inflammatory processes in the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines, the presence of a stomach ulcer or duodenal ulcer, liver dysfunction. Such manifestations require a visit to a gastroenterologist.
To prevent symptoms of rotten egg burps, in the absence of digestive tract diseases, you need to resort to the following measures:
- Never overeat. Food should be taken in small quantities, leaving a feeling that "I could eat a little more." You need to eat often, every two to three hours.
- If, however, you failed to control the amount of food and symptoms of overeating appeared, then an hour after finishing the meal, you need to drink a glass of still mineral water. It is also recommended not to eat for several hours so that the stomach and intestines can digest the excess amount of food.
- You should not eat before bedtime. The latest meal should be two hours before bedtime.
- During the day you need to drink enough water, at least one and a half liters per day.
- You should not eat protein foods in large quantities. It is better to diversify the pregnant woman's menu with porridge, vegetables and fruits in fresh, baked and boiled form.
- Drinking lemon balm tea or ginger tea helps prevent this type of belching.
- Flaxseed decoction, as well as oatmeal jelly, have an enveloping effect on the walls of the stomach and intestines, which reduces the likelihood of belching, and also has an anti-inflammatory effect on the digestive tract.
Heartburn and belching during pregnancy
Heartburn, like belching, is a common digestive disorder during pregnancy.
Heartburn is a burning sensation in the lower chest that causes pain. In most cases, heartburn occurs in the second trimester of pregnancy, approximately around the twentieth to twenty-second week of pregnancy. Moreover, some expectant mothers experience such symptoms for the first time in their lives. It is believed that the overwhelming majority of women suffer from heartburn to varying degrees during the period of bearing a child.
Heartburn occurs after eating. The reason for its occurrence is the penetration of acidic contents of the stomach back into the esophagus, as a result of which hydrochloric gastric acid begins to aggressively affect the mucous membrane of the esophagus, causing a burning sensation.
The penetration of stomach contents into the esophagus is facilitated by hormonal changes in the body of a pregnant woman. Due to changes in hormonal balance, the muscles of the expectant mother lose tone, as do the valves of the digestive tract. The sphincters (circular muscles) located between the stomach and the esophagus relax, which facilitates the penetration of food and gastric juice back.
Also, the pressure of the constantly enlarging uterus on the entire abdominal cavity, including the stomach, contributes to the occurrence of heartburn.
Heartburn during pregnancy is an absolutely safe phenomenon, both for the mother and for the future baby. After the birth of the child, the symptoms of heartburn disappear without a trace and no longer bother the woman.
A special diet can help relieve heartburn in pregnant women:
- It is necessary to get rid of fresh bread and buns, strong meat, fish and mushroom broths, smoked products and pickles, fried and boiled eggs, hot spices, dishes and snacks, pickled vegetables and mushrooms, sour fruits and berries, as well as tomatoes in any form. Drinks that are prohibited include carbonated sweet and mineral water, kvass and black coffee.
- The best way to eliminate foods that contribute to heartburn is to track your condition after each meal. In this case, you can easily identify harmful foods and exclude them from the diet of a pregnant woman.
- It is necessary to add products to the pregnant woman's menu that help reduce heartburn. Eating dry biscuits, vegetable puree soups, steamed meat, milk, cream, non-acidic cottage cheese, cheese, semolina, buckwheat and oatmeal helps reduce the manifestation of heartburn after eating.
- It is recommended to eat some walnuts or almonds during the day.
- During the day, you need to drink enough clean water, at least one and a half liters. A glass of water after eating will help relieve the symptoms of heartburn.
- Drinks that help alleviate the condition include weak tea, cocoa with milk, and various jelly drinks.
Also, following certain rules will help get rid of or at least reduce the symptoms of heartburn:
- You should not eat at night. The last meal should be two to three hours before bedtime. If, however, a pregnant woman is tormented by hunger, she can allow herself to eat some dry biscuits with tea, drink a glass of kefir, eat a non-acidic apple.
- It is not recommended to lie down immediately after finishing a meal. It is best to sit and rest in a comfortable chair or on a sofa for half an hour.
- Avoid making sudden movements or bending over immediately after eating.
- You should sleep using a high pillow or several pillows. As a result, the sleeping position will resemble a semi-sitting position, which will prevent the stomach contents from being thrown into the esophagus.
- I would like to believe that future mothers have already said goodbye to such a bad habit as smoking. If this has not happened, then it should be noted that smoking cigarettes is one of the common causes of heartburn.
Using soda when heartburn occurs is not useful, although a soda solution helps to get rid of burning and pain for a while. The effect of using a soda solution is short-term, and with constant use of this remedy, the water-salt balance in the body of a pregnant woman is often disturbed.
If switching to a special diet and using high pillows during sleep fails to prevent heartburn, you should consult a gastroenterologist.
Frequent burping during pregnancy
Frequent belching during pregnancy usually occurs in the last months of pregnancy. At this time, the rapidly growing uterus exerts strong pressure on the abdominal organs, which contributes to increased gas formation in the intestines and stomach. A large amount of gas that accumulates in the stomach penetrates the esophagus through the loosely closed sphincter between the esophagus and stomach and bursts out in the form of belching.
Exacerbation of chronic diseases of the digestive system, which occurs during pregnancy for many reasons, also contributes to the frequent occurrence of belching.
Frequent belching also occurs due to the constant consumption of foods that cause flatulence. Increased starch and sugar content in food also leads to frequent recurrence of belching symptoms.
Violation of the recommended diet for a pregnant woman is considered the next reason for frequent belching. Abuse of sour foods, pickles and marinades, smoked and fatty foods, as well as fried foods leads to disruption of digestive functions, which manifests itself, among other things, in the form of gas discharge from the oral cavity.
Constant overeating by a pregnant woman and the inability to control the amount of food during meals is a common cause of frequent belching.
Constant physical exertion, which a pregnant woman cannot avoid for certain reasons, also leads to repeated manifestations of discomfort. Perhaps the presence of younger children in the family, as well as the impossibility of going on maternity leave and the need to work does not allow the woman to rest on time and forces her to constantly bend over and move.
Constant burping during pregnancy
Constant belching during pregnancy occurs due to various reasons, which were discussed above in the previous section “Frequent belching during pregnancy”.
Sour burping during pregnancy
It happens that during pregnancy, the expectant mother experiences symptoms of sour belching, which occurs after eating.
Sour belching occurs due to air and acidic (and sometimes alkaline) stomach contents flowing back into the esophagus. Due to the fact that there is unsuitable food in the stomach, which irritates its walls, gases are formed and the walls of the stomach are stretched. Then this whole "cocktail" penetrates into the lower part of the esophagus, where the mucous membrane of the esophagus is irritated by gastric juice - hydrochloric acid, which causes the formation of gases that are released from the mouth.
Sour belching during pregnancy is a consequence of eating various dishes and food products, namely:
- Fatty dishes and products - rich, strong meat and fish broths, as well as first courses that were prepared on their basis; fatty meat - pork, lamb, duck, goose; fatty fish - salmon, trout, pink salmon, salmon, halibut, herring, mackerel, sturgeon, eel, omul, beluga, lamprey, whitefish, sea bass, cod, sardines, saury; fermented milk products with high fat content - sour cream, cottage cheese.
- Spicy dishes and spices – many dishes from exotic cuisines can cause digestive problems in a pregnant woman, including belching. While expecting a baby, you should not indulge yourself with delicacies from Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Vietnamese and other Eastern cuisines, as they contain an excess of hot spices, various herbs and piquant sauces. The expectant mother is also advised to refuse Italian cuisine due to the presence of a large number of sauces with seasonings in it. A pregnant woman should also put aside traditional sauces for our table for a while - mustard, mayonnaise, horseradish, adjika, as well as various spices - pepper, coriander and so on. If there is a negative reaction to onions and garlic, radishes and horseradish, sorrel and spinach, as well as other hot vegetables and greens, it is necessary to remove them from the table of the expectant mother until the end of pregnancy.
- Fried food, home-cooked and store-bought ready-made fried foods. The expectant mother will have to forget about fried potatoes, fried meat, fried fish and fried vegetables, such as zucchini. Also, you should not eat fried eggs in the form of scrambled eggs.
Sour belching lasts for different periods of time. Sometimes, attacks of sour belching disappear within a few minutes, while other times, the unpleasant symptoms continue for hours. In some cases, sour belching can occur repeatedly, several times a day.
Belching after eating during pregnancy
Usually, belching during pregnancy occurs immediately after eating or for a short time after finishing eating. Empty belching of ordinary air indicates that the expectant mother simply caught air during the meal. This is possible if you have a conversation and eat at the same time. For example, an invitation to visit friends or relatives "for tea" is associated with having a pleasant conversation during tea drinking.
Belching after eating may have an unpleasant smell, such as rotten eggs, or taste sour. These symptoms indicate that the pregnant woman's body is experiencing reversible digestive system dysfunctions. The appearance of belching after eating causes increased gas formation in the stomach: the resulting gases penetrate back into the esophagus and oral cavity of the pregnant woman and come out accompanied by a sharp sound.

Diagnosis of belching during pregnancy
Diagnosis of belching during pregnancy is necessary only in cases where the uncomfortable symptoms cause great inconvenience to the pregnant woman. In this case, it is necessary to consult a gastroenterologist, who will prescribe the necessary examination.
Usually, in these cases, a procedure called fibrogastroscopy (FSH) is prescribed. Fibrogastroscopy is a reliable and proven method of examining the esophagus, stomach and intestines to detect various diseases of the digestive tract. With the help of this method, it is possible to diagnose the occurrence of gastritis, duodenitis, stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers, erosions of various types, gastric polyps, etc. in a pregnant woman.
FSH is performed as follows: a flexible tube of small diameter with a light at the end is inserted through the pregnant woman's mouth. Before this, in order to ensure the procedure is painless, the woman's throat is treated with lidocaine spray. During the entire procedure, the patient lies on her side on a comfortable couch, with a mouthpiece in the pregnant woman's mouth through which the device is inserted. When the fibrogastroscope is inserted into the esophagus, the patient must swallow.
The entire procedure lasts no more than ten to fifteen minutes. Moreover, with FSH, the patient does not experience any pain symptoms. Discomfort from using the device is minimal, so fibrogastroscopy can be used to diagnose problems with the digestive tract even in small children.
Gastroscopy is a completely safe method of examination, since all parts of the endoscope that penetrate the patient are thoroughly cleaned and sterilized. Therefore, the penetration of various types of infections into the body of a pregnant woman during diagnostics is completely excluded.
During an endoscope examination, it is possible to take samples of digestive tract tissue for further histological examination, i.e. to perform a biopsy. As a result of this examination, it is possible to establish an accurate diagnosis of the disease that causes the appearance of uncomfortable symptoms. It should also be clarified that the biopsy procedure is always painless for the patient, due to the fact that there are no nerve endings in the tissues from which the samples are taken.
It is necessary to prepare for the FSH test. Usually, diagnostics are performed in the morning on an empty stomach. The last meal should be no later than seven in the evening of the previous day. A day before the gastroscopy, you need to switch to a special diet: exclude meat and fish dishes, legumes, and other poorly digestible foods from consumption. In the morning on the day of diagnostics, it is forbidden to drink, eat, chew gum, and smoke.

Treatment of belching during pregnancy
The appearance of belching during pregnancy is not a disease, so special treatment of this symptomatology is not required. Moreover, during the period of bearing a child, the expectant mother is strongly advised not to take medications due to the fact that they can have a negative effect on the development of the fetus.
Traditional medicine is considered the safest for a pregnant woman and her baby. However, before using it, you should consult a doctor to rule out any negative effects on the woman's body and her baby.
If belching occurs, you can resort to the following folk remedies, namely:
- Taking calamus rhizome powder, which is the most effective remedy for belching symptoms. The powder is taken one-third of a teaspoon three to four times a day. It happens that this remedy allows you to cure not only belching, but also heartburn, which often accompanies the release of gases from the mouth.
- A good and proven remedy for belching is an infusion made from raspberry leaves, chamomile flowers, mint leaves and blackberries. This drink not only prevents belching, but also saturates the body of the expectant mother with useful substances, and also improves digestive functions.
- It is also useful to drink tea with mint or lemon balm, which is brewed at the rate of one spoon of herbs per glass of boiling water.
- Infusion of common centaury: take ten grams of the herb and pour 200 ml of boiling water. After that, the drink is infused for two to three hours, filtered and taken one tablespoon three to four times a day thirty minutes before meals.
- A good help is a decoction of common heather: 15 grams of the herb is poured with half a liter of water and boiled for two to three minutes. The decoction is taken half a glass three to four times a day.
- One of the effective remedies for belching is the spice clove. If you chew one bud of dried spice, you can improve the condition of the digestive tract and eliminate the symptoms of belching. Pregnant women can use this spice, since it is absolutely safe for expectant mothers.
- When belching, you can use an old folk remedy. You need to take a pinch of soda and dissolve it in a glass of water. After that, you need to drink the resulting solution. But before using soda, it is still better to consult a doctor.
Prevention of belching during pregnancy
First of all, the prevention of belching during pregnancy consists of properly organized nutrition of the pregnant woman.
The following foods and drinks should be excluded from the diet of the expectant mother:
- Sweet carbonated drinks – lemonade, Pepsi-Cola, Coca-Cola, and so on.
- Alcoholic beverages.
- Kvass.
- Industrially produced sweets.
- Fast food.
- Bakery products made from premium flour – white wheat bread, buns and other baked goods.
- Pasta.
- Smoked products.
- Various pickles and salted foods, as well as marinades.
- Spicy foods, spices and herbs, hot dishes.
- Fatty foods and dishes.
- Fried food.
- Sour berries and other very sour foods.
You should also reduce your consumption of the following healthy foods that cause flatulence:
- Legumes.
- White cabbage and other types of cabbage.
- Asparagus.
- Bananas.
- Grapes.
You shouldn't completely give up eating the above-mentioned vegetables and fruits, as they contain a large amount of useful substances. You can eat them not every day and in small portions.
Useful types of products that contain excess starches should also be limited in consumption. This group of products includes:
- Potato.
- Oatmeal.
- Black bread.
Another group of foods that can cause burping are those that are high in sugar and fructose. These include:
- Pears.
- Artichokes.
- Onions.
Therefore, it is worth limiting the consumption of these vegetables and fruits, and in some cases, stop eating them altogether until the end of pregnancy.
In addition to the proper organization of your diet, you must adhere to the following rules:
- When eating, you should chew each piece of food slowly and for a long time. You need to make at least forty chewing movements during the consumption of one portion of food. During the meal, you should exclude various conversations, it is best to eat in silence. Such conditions will not only protect the pregnant woman from belching, but will also contribute to the improvement of digestion in the entire gastrointestinal tract.
- At least half an hour before eating, you need to drink one glass of clean water. The drinking procedure should be done with small sips. Sometimes experts recommend dissolving a few drops of mint essence in water, which helps prevent belching. This remedy is absolutely safe for a pregnant woman, so it can be used regularly.
- At lunch, it is recommended to eat a light first course, which is not prepared in strong broths. It is useful to eat vegetarian vegetable and cereal soups with vegetables. Such soups help to produce the necessary amount of secretion in the stomach for digestion of food, and also reduce the process of gas formation.
- Instead of sweets, it is best to use honey, dried fruits, and sweet fruits.
- It is recommended that the pregnant woman's diet include foods and dishes that have an alkaline effect. These include cream, sour cream, butter, cottage cheese, soft-boiled eggs and steamed omelets, boiled lean meat, and unrefined vegetable oils. But the consumption of fatty foods such as sour cream, cream, and butter should be limited to one hundred grams per day, so as not to provoke acidic heartburn due to the increased fat content.
- In some cases, when belching begins to bother a pregnant woman, it is necessary to stop eating raw vegetables and fruits for a while. Vegetables should be boiled or stewed, and fruits should be baked before eating.
- An hour after eating, it is recommended to drink a glass of ginger tea, which has beneficial properties for the digestion of pregnant women. In addition, this drink is absolutely safe, so it can be safely prepared during pregnancy.
- You should not eat at night, since digestion in a lying position contributes to the disruption of digestive functions and the appearance of belching. The latest time for an evening meal is two hours before bedtime. If, however, you really want to eat before bedtime, you should drink a glass of kefir or eat an apple before bed.
- A pregnant woman should not overeat, as such abuse of food intake causes belching. It is better to eat often and in small portions. In the first trimester of pregnancy, the daily food intake should be divided into four times, in the second trimester - into five times, and in the third trimester - into six times.
- It is necessary to get rid of such a bad habit as smoking. We will not touch upon the negative impact of cigarettes on the fetus, we will only mention that cigarette smoke contributes to the occurrence of belching, as well as heartburn and digestive problems.
- To normalize the digestive system, you need to drink clean water often. Drinking water should be filtered independently using filters or purchased purified water. The amount of water drunk per day should be at least one and a half to two liters. You should not drink mineral water or tea instead of regular water - these drinks will not replace drinking water.
- A pregnant woman should not wear tight-fitting clothes that sit tightly on the body. Since such clothes contribute to the accumulation of gases in the stomach and intestines, which provokes belching.
- The expectant mother should not take positions that cause discomfort symptoms. It is necessary to avoid bending forward, and also not to lie down to rest in a horizontal position immediately after eating. It is best to rest after the meal, sitting in a chair or on a sofa. During the night period, it is worth stocking up on a large number of pillows to put them under the body in such a way that you take a semi-recumbent position during sleep.
- Every day you need to take leisurely walks in the fresh air, preferably in a park or square. Measured movements will prevent gas stagnation in the digestive tract, which will reduce the manifestation of belching.
Belching during pregnancy prognosis
The appearance of belching is not a mandatory condition of pregnancy. It happens that expectant mothers never encounter such a phenomenon. It happens that belching occurs in women episodically, without causing much discomfort, and after childbirth young mothers completely forget about it.
In some pregnant women, belching symptoms may only appear in the early stages of pregnancy, while in other categories of women, they may appear in the later stages and prenatal stages.
Sometimes belching bothers the expectant mother throughout the pregnancy, and this is the most severe manifestation of this digestive dysfunction. In these cases, we can talk about the presence of chronic diseases of the digestive system that were present before pregnancy and caused belching during this period.
Symptoms of belching disappear immediately after childbirth, since the physiological causes that provoked its appearance are also eliminated.
If a woman’s belching does not disappear after the birth of a child, it is necessary to see a specialist, since this fact is a sign of the onset (or exacerbation) of diseases of the digestive tract.
