Who is suitable for kefir masks, and who needs caution and restrictions?

Kefir masks are especially beneficial for those with dry, slightly damaged, or normal hair, as well as those with moderate dryness or scalp sensitivity. The mild acidity and protein content help reduce the feeling of dryness after washing, leaving hair smooth and easier to comb. For curly and porous hair, kefir can also reduce frizz by smoothing the cuticle and retaining moisture in the surface layers. [15]

For those with mild dandruff and mild scalp itching, a kefir mask can provide temporary relief between treatments with specialized products. Lactic acid and fermented ingredients have a gentle dust-removing and moisturizing effect, while maintaining a slightly acidic pH promotes comfortable skin. For oily seborrhea and severe dandruff, a kefir mask alone is insufficient. How to prepare and use kefir masks at home: practical recommendations

The basic application of a kefir mask is simple. Wash your hair with a suitable shampoo, gently squeeze it with a towel, and apply kefir to the scalp and lengths of your hair. The consistency should be smooth, without large clumps. Typically, the kefir is left on for ten to thirty minutes, then thoroughly rinsed with warm water and, if necessary, applied to the lengths with a light conditioner. The more thoroughly you rinse, the less likely you'll feel a heavy feeling or have a residual odor. [22]

For dry and damaged hair, kefir can be combined with a small amount of vegetable oil and moisturizing ingredients, such as a drop of jojoba oil or gentle conditioning agents. It's important not to overload the mask with too many heavy oils, as this will weigh down the hair and increase oiliness at the roots. Focus on the lengths and ends, where damage is usually greatest. What a kefir mask can't do: common myths

One common myth is the claim that a kefir mask "stops baldness" and "starts new hair growth" for any form of hair loss. Currently, there are no clinical studies confirming that kefir masks alone can stop androgenetic alopecia or other severe forms of hair loss. Scientific data on the treatment of alopecia emphasize the role of medications, correction of deficiencies, sometimes procedural methods, and hair transplantation, rather than homemade masks. [29]

Another myth revolves around the promise of "completely restoring" severely damaged hair structure. Kefir may improve mechanical properties and reduce breakage thanks to proteins, peptides, and moisturizing ingredients, but it cannot "grow" split ends or completely restore chemically damaged hair to its original state. Reviews of the physicochemical properties of hair show that all products have a primarily superficial and partially filling effect, and radical elimination of split ends is only possible through trimming. Sometimes you'll come across claims that a kefir mask "lifts the color" of dyed hair or serves as a natural lightening method. In practice, kefir's slightly acidic environment doesn't have a pronounced lightening effect comparable to professional products. Hair growth and quality depend on many factors: nutrition, endocrine status, stress levels, and chronic diseases. Manufacturers claim that these products combine the benefits of fermentation with the safety and predictability of their composition. However, these excipients can sometimes cause irritation in people with sensitive skin. Therefore, even when purchasing professional products containing fermented ingredients, testing on a small area remains a wise precaution. [37]

When preparing kefir masks at home, it's important to follow basic hygiene rules: use clean utensils, don't store the mixture for long periods of time, and avoid applying the mask to skin with visible damage. Homemade products without preservatives are a favorable environment for microbial growth, meaning the longer the mask sits at room temperature, the higher the risk of microbial contamination and skin irritation. Kefir masks occupy a place in the cosmetic and maintenance care category. They can be useful as part of a program for dry, slightly damaged, and curly hair, as well as a gentle aid for moderate dryness or scalp discomfort. However, in cases of persistent hair loss, severe dandruff, itching, pain, or changes in hair structure, a medical diagnosis and evidence-based treatments should always be considered, and masks are considered only as a supplement. An optimal hair care strategy includes a combination of gentle, regular cleansing, the careful use of conditioners and masks, gentle styling, protection from thermal and chemical damage, and, if necessary, consultation with a trichologist or dermatologist.
