Aspirin is a drug with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Let's consider the possibility of its use in cosmetology for the treatment of acne.
Acetylsalicylic acid is known under the trade name Aspirin, which first appeared in 1899. The drug has an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. The drug is also taken to thin the blood with an increased risk of blood clots, heart attacks, strokes. [ 1 ]
Another option for using the medication is to reduce the activity of the sebaceous glands and eliminate inflammatory processes on the skin.
- The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug contains the active ingredient - acetylsalicylic acid 500 mg and a number of auxiliary components (potato starch 72.1 mg, citric acid 0.2 mg, stearic acid 6.0 mg, talc 12.7 mg, colloidal silicon dioxide 3.0 mg, sodium starch glycolate, Primogel 6.0 mg.
- The active component reduces exudation, redness and swelling in the inflammation area. Slows down the activity of substances that support the inflammatory process.
- The medicine has a drying and exfoliating effect, cleanses pores, reduces inflammation. [ 2 ], [ 3 ]
Acne appears due to accumulation of sebum, which provokes active reproduction of bacteria and development of the inflammatory process. The pimple gradually matures, a red painful tubercle with purulent contents appears. Skin rashes can be caused by hormonal and non-hormonal factors.
The first group includes puberty, endocrine disorders, pregnancy. Non-hormonal causes of acne are diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, improper skin care, stress, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, and unhealthy diet.
Acne treatment should be comprehensive, as aspirin will not eliminate the root cause of skin defects. To do this, you should contact a dermatologist and, if necessary, take a set of tests. Based on the diagnostic results, the doctor will draw up a treatment plan for the skin problem.
Does aspirin help acne?
Acetylsalicylic acid is a medicinal product. The medication has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic properties. Aspirin is also used externally, in which case it has the following effect on the skin:
- Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial – reduces the number of skin rashes, destroys pathogenic flora. Prevents the spread of bacteria to healthy areas of the skin.
- Drying and exfoliating effect - scrubs the skin, removing dead epidermal cells. Accelerates the healing of pustules and other skin defects.
- Cleanses and tightens pores – aspirin helps normalize sebum production, which acts as a preventative measure against blackheads.
- It relieves pain – relieves itching, redness, and severe pain associated with pustular rashes.
The medicine also has a calming effect on the skin, accelerates the healing of post-acne wounds. Restores complexion, eliminates pigment spots after acne.
Based on the above properties of acetylsalicylic acid, we can conclude that when used correctly, it really does help with acne.
Acetylsalicylic acid for face against acne
External use of aspirin is effective in combating skin rashes and acne. The drug contains salicylic acid, the action of which is aimed at stimulating the processes of division and regeneration of the skin.
Useful properties of acetylsalicylic acid:
- Stops inflammatory processes.
- Exfoliates dead skin cells.
- Cleanses and tightens pores.
- Prevents the appearance of blackheads (clogged sebaceous plugs).
- Improves complexion, fights pigmentation.
To eliminate skin defects, acetylsalicylic acid is combined with various herbal remedies. Popular are whitening masks based on aspirin and white clay, honey compresses, as well as skin peeling preparations, and various creams.
Indications Aspirin for acne
All masks, creams and other acne medications based on acetylsalicylic acid affect only the upper layers of the dermis, without affecting the deep ones.
The active component stabilizes and reduces the activity of the sebaceous glands. This helps reduce inflammatory processes. The drug increases blood flow to the surface layer of the dermis, thereby improving nutrition and saturation of the skin with vitamins and useful components.
The main indications for the use of aspirin for cosmetic purposes:
- Pimples, pustules, acne, nodular or papular rash.
- Increased oiliness of the skin.
- Swelling and redness of the skin.
- Aging and fading processes of the dermis (preparations based on acetylsalicylic acid tighten the oval of the face, restore turgor and color of the skin).
- Pigmentation spots, traces of pimples and acne.
Before using aspirin, you should keep in mind that it will not help if skin defects are caused by disorders of the digestive, genitourinary, endocrine or other body systems.
Aspirin for acne and blackheads
Blackheads are open comedones that form due to complete blockage of pores with sebum, dead cells, microparticles of dust and dirt. Representatives of oily and combination skin types are most susceptible to the appearance of blackheads on the forehead, nose, chin, that is, in the T-zone.
The main reasons for the appearance of blackheads:
- Hypersecretion of the sebaceous glands or disruption of their function.
- Hormonal imbalance.
- Unbalanced diet.
- Improper skin care.
- Bad habits.
- Genetic predisposition.
- Incorrectly selected skin care cosmetics.
- Regular contact of hands with facial skin.
- Stress.
- Sleep disturbance.
- Use of aggressive cosmetics.
Treatment of blackheads begins with determining the cause of their appearance. First of all, you should review your diet and lifestyle. The most popular, affordable and at the same time effective method of cleansing the skin is the use of home masks and scrubs based on acetylsalicylic acid.
To prepare the cosmetic product, take 3 aspirin tablets and 2 teaspoons of facial lotion. Grind the preparation thoroughly and mix with the lotion. Apply the mixture in a thin layer to problem areas of the skin for 10-15 minutes, then rinse gently. The procedure can be performed daily until the desired result is achieved.
If after a month of using aspirin masks the blackheads have not gone away, you should consult a dermatologist and cosmetologist. The specialist will determine the skin type, the causes of acne and other defects, and also select the right skin care cosmetics.
Aspirin for acne scars
One of the complications of acne on the skin is red and pigmented spots, that is, post-acne.
Causes of acne scars:
- Acute inflammatory process at the site of the pimple.
- Irritation, enlargement or inflammation of the pores after damaging the pimple (scratching, squeezing).
- Careless mechanical removal of a pimple and the formation of subcutaneous hemorrhage.
- The appearance of spots may be due to damage to the deep layers of the skin. In this case, red or dark purple spots form on the tissue.
To eliminate them, use various masks, creams, special lotions. Aspirin is good for evening out skin tone. For spots after acne, you can use the following recipes:
- Crush three aspirin tablets and mix with a teaspoon of honey or boiled water. Apply the mask to your face for 20 minutes. Salicylic acid will relieve inflammation, have an antibacterial effect and remove redness.
- Grind two tablets of the preparation and mix with 12 g of white clay. Add water to the dry mixture to obtain a creamy consistency. Apply the preparation to the face for 10-15 minutes, rinse with cool water.
- Grind five aspirin tablets to a powder. Prepare 12 g of blue clay, 10 g of salt, 5 ml of lemon juice and 1 clove of crushed garlic. Mix the salt with the lemon juice (salt sediment should settle). Add the crushed aspirin, garlic and clay. Mix everything thoroughly and apply an even layer to the face for 15-20 minutes.
Particular attention should be paid to preventive measures. Do not squeeze pimples, disinfect them from the moment they appear. Be sure to use sunscreens and professionally selected skin care cosmetics.
Release form
Acetylsalicylic acid is available in tablet form. The drug is available in the form of 500 mg tablets, 10 pcs. in a blister, 1-5 contour cell packs in a pack.
Acetylsalicylic acid is a component of many cosmetic products. And this is not surprising, since aspirin relieves inflammation, dries up acne and has an antiseptic effect. The drug eliminates pathogenic flora, preventing further development of acne and damage to healthy tissues.
To combat acne, you can use aspirin in tablets, which are sold in pharmacies. External use of the drug has the following properties:
- Stabilizes the functioning of the sebaceous glands.
- Tones the skin.
- Restores and normalizes the color and structure of the face.
The tablets are used to make masks, peels, and lotions that reduce skin oiliness, tighten pores, and cleanse blackheads and comedones. When applied to the skin, acetylsalicylic acid causes blood flow to the outer layers of the epidermis. This improves blood circulation and makes the tissues velvety.
The scrub based on the medicinal product cleanses the pores from dead cells, cleans dirt and fat from the pores. After peeling, the face becomes clean with an even skin color, unpleasant shine and redness disappear.
But, despite all the useful properties, the drug should be used externally with extreme caution. Aspirin can dry out the skin, cause allergic reactions, and the appearance of rosacea (red dots from small vessels). It should also be taken into account that abuse of the drug can become a provoking factor for the sebaceous glands, which is why they will intensively produce secretion.
Pharmacodynamics
Acetylsalicylic acid has analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties. The mechanism of action of the drug is based on inhibition of the activity of cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2. These enzymes participate in the synthesis of prostaglandins, thromboxane and prostacyclins. This leads to disruption of prostaglandin synthesis and an analgesic effect.
The anti-inflammatory effect of the drug is based on reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins, reducing capillary permeability, and limiting the energy supply of inflammation. The active substance reduces platelet aggregation and adhesion, inhibits thrombus formation by suppressing the synthesis of A2 in platelets.
Pharmacokinetics
The pharmacokinetic properties of acetylsalicylic acid have been studied only for its internal use. Aspirin is characterized by complete absorption and systemic elimination in the intestinal walls and liver.
The resorbed portion of the drug is hydrolyzed by esterases, due to which the half-life is about 20 minutes. The maximum concentration in the blood plasma is achieved within two hours. It is excreted by active secretion in the renal tubules unchanged and as metabolites.
As for the pharmacokinetics of acetylsalicylic acid when used externally, it has not been studied. At the same time, it is known that the drug does not penetrate into the deep layers of the skin, that is, into the subcutaneous fat tissue, affecting only the epidermis and dermis.
Dosing and administration
It is not recommended to apply aspirin tablets to the face in their pure form. It is better to prepare masks, peels and other means for skin care and acne removal from the medicine.
The method of application and dosage of home cosmetics depend on the severity of skin defects. That is, masks can be applied precisely to pimples or to the entire face in case of multiple lesions.
Basic rules for using aspirin-based masks:
- Before the procedure, test the sensitivity of the components included in the mask. Apply a small amount of the prepared mixture to the elbow or behind the ear. Check the skin condition after 15-20 minutes. If there is redness, rash or itching, the mask is contraindicated.
- Before applying any product, cleanse your skin thoroughly. It is better to use lotions with a mild effect.
- The maximum time for the mask to act is 15-20 minutes. After this, the product must be washed off the skin and a moisturizer applied.
- Acetylsalicylic acid has a vasodilatory effect, so it is better to carry out cosmetic procedures 1-2 times a week. More frequent external use of the drug is dangerous due to the appearance of a vascular network on the skin.
If there are a lot of pimples, they cause painful sensations, become inflamed and fester, then before using aspirin masks you should consult a dermatologist
How long to keep aspirin on your face for acne?
In order for home aspirin care to be effective and beneficial for the skin, it is necessary to use the medicine correctly.
Before carrying out cosmetic procedures, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist. This is necessary in order to determine what caused the acne. If the rash is caused by disorders of the endocrine, digestive and other body systems, then acetylsalicylic acid will not help.
When preparing any aspirin-based product, it is necessary to strictly follow the recipe and use only fresh ingredients. It is better to do Maxi no more than 1-2 times a week and keep it for no more than 20 minutes. The remains of the medicinal mass are carefully removed from the skin with warm water, and then a cream with a good moisturizing effect is applied.
Lotions and tonics based on aspirin are suitable for daily ear. It is better to carry out procedures in the evening. At night, the skin will receive the maximum of useful substances for complete recovery. Also, do not forget that after salicylic masks, before going outside, you should apply sunscreen to your face.
