The functions of an inflamed pancreas can only be restored by following a special diet. Diet table No. 5p has been developed for patients with pancreatitis; as the acute condition subsides, it is replaced by diet No. 5 with less strict nutritional rules. Diets provide for sparing the diseased organ, protecting the digestive system from coarse, spicy, sour, fatty, too hot or cold food. At the same time, the body must receive the necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals, which fruits fully correspond to.
Raw fruits for pancreatitis
Of all the variety of fruit crops, not all of their fruits can be consumed by people with this pathology. The main task is to protect the pancreas from coarse fibers in their composition, aggressive acids. Some of them are not suitable in raw form, but are acceptable after heat treatment. What raw fruits can and cannot be consumed with pancreatitis, taking into account that exacerbations completely exclude their consumption. We are talking only about the period of stable remission.
Peaches for pancreatitis
The juicy, aromatic fruit contains vitamins A, C, E, PP, H, B1, B2, B5, B6, folic acid, a large list of minerals, including magnesium, potassium, calcium, iodine, iron, etc.
They improve appetite, intestinal peristalsis, strengthen the walls of blood vessels, increase hemoglobin, and create a cheerful mood. [ 1 ]
Patients with pancreatitis should choose ripe juicy fruits, peel them first, and eat them as desserts after the main meal. A reasonable daily intake is half a large or one medium fruit. You can also make juice from them, diluting it with half water.
Nectarines for pancreatitis
Nectarines are a type of peach. They are distinguished by their completely smooth skin, like a plum. In terms of their qualities, they are similar to their "relative". The low sugar content allows diabetics to eat them, unlike peaches.
Nectarine is famous for its ability to cleanse the body of waste products, it is a well-known antioxidant that accelerates cell renewal, which is very important when they are damaged in the pancreas. [ 2 ]
There is even a short-term diet on nectarines, which allows you to unload the body and lose a little extra weight, but it is for healthy people. Pancreatitis limits the consumption of the fruit, as well as peaches.
Plums for pancreatitis
Citric, malic, oxalic, succinic, ascorbic - all these acids are present in plums and become an obstacle in the acute phase of the disease. [ 3 ]
A clear improvement and a stable absence of symptoms allows you to eat plums raw, but no more than 3-4 pieces a day, peeled. You should not give them up completely, because their chemical composition allows you to remove toxins and waste, reduce cholesterol, prevent thrombosis, strengthen blood vessels, and eliminate constipation.
Pears for pancreatitis
The advantage of pears over the fruits described above is that they are available for sale throughout the winter period and, if many ignore them in the summer due to the abundance of other fruits, then in the winter they regain their well-deserved popularity. [ 4 ]
In case of pancreatitis, pears might not have any restrictions (their acidity is much lower than apples), if it were not for the presence of stone cells - sclereids. Dead cells are distinguished by the ability to accumulate lime, cutin (a type of wax), strong crystals of silicon dioxide.
All this makes pears a heavy food, even baking or boiling does not save the situation. It is best to exclude them from your menu completely.
Dates for pancreatitis
Containing many useful compounds, sweet oriental fruits have a beneficial effect on the nervous and cardiovascular systems, improve sleep, strengthen the immune system, resist inflammatory and infectious diseases, and accelerate the regeneration of cells in damaged organs. [ 5 ]
The negative side of this fruit for the pancreas is the large amount of glucose, which causes increased secretion of insulin. This additionally burdens its endocrine part.
And yet, in the developed nutrition system for such pathology, dates are listed as permitted products, they can replace harmful fast carbohydrates. A stable state of health allows you to eat up to ten ripe and soft fruits per day.
Avocado for pancreatitis
Avocado is a new-fangled fruit that has gained popularity in various culinary recipes in recent years. It is used in salads, sauces, it goes well with meat, fish, seafood, so it can serve as a side dish for them.
It is actively promoted by nutritionists, relying on the high content of essential vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals.
Potassium in its composition strengthens the heart muscle, copper and iron participate in hematopoiesis, unsaturated fatty acids normalize fat metabolism, cholesterol, dietary fiber promotes the growth of beneficial microflora, eliminates constipation. [ 6 ]
In case of pancreatitis, the obstacle to unlimited consumption of the fruit is its high fat content, which is difficult for the diseased gland to cope with. Fiber can also cause a lot of trouble associated with bloating, heaviness in the abdomen, flatulence.
Only after 2 months after the exacerbation can you introduce avocado into your diet by the teaspoon, make puree from it, add it to salads.
Kiwi for pancreatitis
The fruit is khaki-colored, slightly fuzzy, and tastes like strawberries with a slight sourness. Kiwi has long won our sympathies, especially children. Although it comes from southern countries with a subtropical climate, we have already learned to grow it here, and have developed varieties suitable for our climate. [ 7 ]
In addition to its excellent taste, it is famous for its large number of biologically active substances. Pancreatitis imposes restrictions on its consumption due to the presence of coarse dietary fiber and pronounced acidity.
Chronic course of the disease with a stable normal condition allows eating one ripe kiwi per day.
Pomegranate for pancreatitis
Pomegranate is too sour for the pancreas. However, it contains so many useful nutrients that you have to weigh the benefits and harms. It has excellent disinfectant properties, improves blood circulation, fights diarrhea and is simply a storehouse of substances necessary for the body. [ 8 ]
Stable remission allows you to eat the fruit grains little by little (up to 20 pieces). The absence of pain, nausea and other symptoms of pancreatitis is a sign that you can increase the portion to 300g.
Figs for pancreatitis
Figs, due to their composition, are indicated for many diseases, including anemia, constipation, in the treatment of colds and coughs (diaphoretic, reduces temperature, increases immunity), blood vessels, in the fight against blood clots. Pectin in it helps remove toxins and poisons from the body, so the berry is effective in poisoning. [ 9 ]
In the case of pancreatitis, everything is not so clear. Figs are very high in calories, 100g contains 240 calories, they also contain a lot of sugar, which can provoke a jump in blood glucose, they are rich in fiber, vegetable oils. All of these characteristics prohibit raw berries.
Pineapples for pancreatitis
Another forbidden fruit for pancreatitis is pineapple. Despite its many advantages due to vitamins, micro- and macroelements, low calorie content and excellent taste, it contains organic acids that can provoke an exacerbation as a result of irritation of the structural elements of the gastrointestinal tract. [ 10 ]
Only absolutely stable remission gives the opportunity to try this exotic fruit in small doses. This should not be done on an empty stomach, but as a dessert.
Citrus fruits for pancreatitis
Even a child knows about the benefits of citrus fruits: glucose, fructose, pectins, phytoncides, essential oils, organic acids, vitamins A, C, E, PP provide their anti-inflammatory, immunostimulating, antioxidant effect. For a person with diseased digestive organs, they can cause harm, because they contain acids that stimulate the glandular epithelium of the stomach and lead to additional secretion of pancreatic juice. Exacerbations of the disease categorically exclude their consumption, and long-term remission allows some representatives of citrus fruits. [ 11 ] Let's dwell on the most popular:
- lemon for pancreatitis - sour taste (100g of fruit contains up to 8% organic acids). The aroma of the fruit is due to the presence of such substances as citral, limonene, geranyl acetate, which also have an irritating effect on the organ. The verdict is one - lemon is not recommended for pancreatitis, both during exacerbations and chronic course of the pathology;
- oranges for pancreatitis - high content of ascorbic acid, sugars, fiber, essential oils - everything that makes the fruit desirable for anti-infective protection of the body, antioxidant activity and simply satisfying gastronomic needs, is unacceptable in the acute stage of pancreatitis. In the phase of stable remission, 1-2 sweet ripe fruits per day will not hurt;
- tangerines for pancreatitis are another natural immunomodulator, intestinal cleanser, and supplier of useful substances. However, it also contains acids, pectins, and fiber, which can irritate the pancreas, and it is also a highly allergenic product.
Chronic inflammation of the organ allows you to consume ripe sweet fruits in moderation without any negative impact on the condition of the pancreas.
Mango for pancreatitis
Unripe fruit contains many acids: oxalic, citric, succinic, malic. They determine its sour taste. The composition of ripe fruit is completely different - few acids, many natural sugars and vitamins. These are the ones recommended in the absence of exacerbation. [ 12 ]
Their plant pepsin will help in breaking down animal proteins, increasing their digestibility. Mangoes have anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects, calm the nervous system, help stop bleeding, and improve intestinal microflora.
However, overeating them can lead to stomach upset, allergies and high blood sugar.
Kohlrabi for pancreatitis
Kohlrabi is a type of cabbage. Its edible part, the rhizome, is very similar to turnips. The leaves are also used in salads. Despite the fact that the plant is rich in many useful nutrients that have a beneficial effect on metabolism, the state of the cardiovascular system, and immunity, it is prohibited for patients with pancreatitis. [ 13 ]
Coconut for pancreatitis
Some sources claim that fresh coconut helps restore pancreatic function. But when you study the chemical composition of the fruit, you see that it contains a lot of carbohydrates, especially in milk, and the pulp is rich in fats (more than 30g per 100g of fruit). These are undesirable components for an inflamed organ.
The use of a small amount of coconut shavings as an addition to dishes is allowed during the period of calm of the disease.
