Stone is the most common cause of bladder congestion. Other more rare causes may be tumors and strictures (constrictions). In males, another rare cause of bladder blockage may be an increase in the prostate.
A dog with a blockage of the bladder feels very bad and is in very serious condition. Both male and female dogs often occupy a position with spread legs in an attempt to empty the bladder. Partial obstruction can be suspected if the dog urinates in a thin trickle, often or the urine stream is weak and sprays.
If left untreated partial occlusion, it can go to full. With complete blockage, urination is not complete. In the lower abdomen there is edema, intra-abdominal pressure rises and it seems as if the ball is in front of the pelvis. Do not forget that the prolonged stress associated with blockage of the bladder can be mistaken for constipation.
Treatment: in a dog with partial obstruction due to a stone in the urethra, the stone can come out spontaneously. Treatment in this case does not differ from the treatment described earlier for stones in the bladder and urethra.
Complete blockage of the bladder is a condition requiring emergency medical care. Immediately bring your dog to the vet. If the obstruction is not eliminated, the dog may develop kidney failure or a bladder rupture. Often, with a sterile catheter or when water is injected into the urethra under high pressure, the stone can be pushed back into the bladder. If this does not happen, then there is a need for surgical removal.
