Many patients wonder how diet can help with stomach cancer? However, there is scientific evidence that the food consumed by patients can help speed up tissue regeneration and even slow down the growth of cancer.
Of course, a diet alone is unlikely to help with cancer. But complex procedures, surgical and therapeutic measures against the background of diet significantly increase the patient's chances of recovery.
What is the diet for stomach cancer?
Numerous medical studies have shown that regular fruit and vegetable consumption has a beneficial effect on cellular metabolic processes and prevents cancerous cell degeneration. Plant foods help strengthen the immune system and relieve inflammatory processes in the body.
When preparing a menu for patients with a cancerous tumor in the stomach, the patient's age, physiology and psychology, as well as the degree of the tumor process are taken into account.
Compliance with dietary recommendations is mandatory in the preparatory period before the main treatment measures and during chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other therapeutic procedures. A professionally selected dietary nutrition scheme will accelerate the improvement of the general condition and reduce side effects from exposure to radiation and chemicals.
When creating a diet menu, you should consider the following recommendations:
- it is necessary to reduce fat consumption (no more than 30% of the total energy value of the daily menu);
- eat little but often;
- eat as much plant food as possible, drink freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices;
- remove sweets, baked goods and sugar from the menu;
- limit the consumption of starchy foods (potatoes, bananas, corn);
- limit the amount of salt to 5 g per day;
- completely give up alcoholic and low-alcohol drinks, as well as black coffee;
- switch to green tea, tomato juice (without salt), vegetable broths.
A diet for stomach cancer should include foods that slow the growth of cancerous tumors, and also involves avoiding foods that activate this growth.
Diet after surgery for stomach cancer
The diet after surgery for stomach cancer should be as gentle as possible; in the first days after surgery, it is even possible to perform therapeutic fasting (as recommended by a doctor).
Since the digestive capacity of the stomach is usually impaired after surgery, insufficiently digested food particles can enter the intestines, which manifests itself as discomfort in the stomach, nausea and other dyspeptic symptoms.
To prevent this, you need to eat very small portions (no more than 2 dishes at a time) and drink no more than 150-200 ml of liquid at a time.
The percentage of protein food in the diet should be increased, ensuring sufficient vitamin intake. The amount of carbohydrates and salt, on the contrary, should be greatly limited.
The daily diet after surgery may be approximately as follows:
- we have meatballs with rice porridge and tea for breakfast;
- we snack on a mashed apple;
- for lunch we have half a portion of pureed vegetarian soup, a little kefir or yogurt;
- afternoon snack – half a portion of small vermicelli with cheese;
- we have dinner with stewed vegetables and a piece of boiled fish fillet;
- Before bed – 150 ml of kefir or some fresh cottage cheese.
After a few months, the diet can be gradually expanded based on the doctor's recommendations. After 1-1 ½ years, it is allowed to switch to a normal diet (if there are no contraindications). When switching to a normal diet, the diet is significantly expanded, but it is recommended to continue eating small portions of food and limiting carbohydrates.

Diet recipes for stomach cancer
- Cabbage with rice in Greek style
We will need: 600-700 g of cabbage, 1 onion, 2 carrots, 100 ml of tomato juice, 100 g of rice, 100 g of vegetable oil, a little parsley or dill, a little salt and green onions.
Finely chop the cabbage, cut the onion into squares, and the carrots into wheels. Sauté the onion in vegetable oil until transparent, as well as the carrots. Add green onions and cabbage and simmer over high heat, stirring constantly. After the cabbage has softened, pour in tomato juice, rice, and water (twice as much as rice). Cover with a lid and simmer until the rice is done. Sprinkle with herbs before serving.
- Potatoes are hot
You will need: six potatoes, a tablespoon of soy sauce, 100 g of grated hard cheese, herbs, garlic, vegetable oil.
Boil the potatoes without peeling, cool, flatten each potato with a flat plate (to soften). Place in a mold, grease each potato with oil, sprinkle with herbs, garlic, drip a little soy sauce. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Bake at 180 ° C for about 15 minutes.
- Steamed oatmeal cutlets
We will need: a glass of oatmeal, half a glass of boiling water, one potato, one onion, two cloves of garlic, herbs, salt, sunflower oil.
Pour the flakes into a saucepan, pour in boiling water, cover and leave for 15-20 minutes to swell. Meanwhile, peel the potato, grate it on a fine grater, do the same with the onion, finely chop the greens, press the garlic. Mix everything with the swollen flakes, add salt and make cutlets. If the consistency of the minced meat does not allow you to form cutlets, you can add one egg. Cook in a steamer for 5-8 minutes.
