The individual configuration of the nose, the zygomatic area and the middle third of the face, as well as the lower part of the cheeks and lower jaw defines the fundamental architectural proportions and contour of the face. The balance between these structures and the uniform distribution of the covering soft tissue structures determine the beauty and harmony of the face. Modern criteria of beauty are characterized by vigorous contours of the face, which are emphasized by the juvenile cheek-cheek configuration and a clear contour of the line of the lower jaw. Too small or too large dimensions of each of these projections affect the aesthetic importance of others. For example, reducing the protrusion of the nose causes more emphasis on the volume and protrusion of the cheekbones and lower jaw, and highlighting the cheekbones or enlarging the lower jaw and chin results in the nose looking smaller and not so impressive.

The concept of contour plasty of the face assumes a change in its shape. The surgeon can obtain significant contour changes only by a reasonable change in the mass and volume of different anatomical regions and the redistribution of soft tissues. Usually, when the task is to increase, it is performed by selecting the implants of the desired shape and size, and adjusting their position over the bone base of the face.
