The individual configuration of the nose, zygomatic region and middle third of the face, as well as the lower part of the cheeks and the lower jaw, determines the fundamental architectural proportions and contour of the face. The balance between these structures and the uniform distribution of the overlying soft tissue structures determine the beauty and harmony of the face. Modern beauty criteria are characterized by energetic facial contours, which are emphasized by a youthful cheek-zygomatic configuration and a clear contour of the lower jaw line. Too small or too large dimensions of each of these protrusions affect the aesthetic importance of the others. For example, reducing the protrusion of the nose causes greater emphasis on the volume and protrusion of the cheekbones and lower jaw, while emphasizing the cheekbones or enlarging the lower jaw and chin leads to the nose appearing smaller and less impressive.

The concept of facial contouring involves changing its shape. The surgeon can achieve significant contour changes only by intelligently changing the mass and volume of various anatomical areas and redistributing soft tissues. Usually, when the goal is augmentation, it is accomplished by selecting implants of the desired shape and size and adjusting their position over the bony base of the face.
