A muscle biopsy performed to patients after repeated injections did not reveal any permanent atrophy or degeneration. In some patients receiving large doses of botox (300 U or more, for example, about torticollis), antibodies to botulinum toxin can be produced. They do not cause a hypersensitivity reaction or anaphylaxis. However, antibodies block the action of the toxin, making the patient resistant to further treatment with botox.
