Those who know a lot about cosmetics claim that a coffee face mask can be considered a classic for dull, tired skin. Just as a morning cup of freshly brewed coffee gives a person a boost of energy, a mask made from coffee grounds perfectly tones the cells of the epidermis and is suitable for all skin types - when adding ingredients depending on the problems of your skin.
Benefits of coffee for skin
About 10 years ago, cosmetic companies started using caffeine as an ingredient in skin care products because of its incredible tightening and smoothing effect. And almost all the reviews of coffee face masks contain the phrase “it really works and makes skin look much younger.”
So what “works” in such masks, that is, what are the benefits of coffee for the skin?
Everyone knows that coffee contains caffeine - about 40-60 mg in every 100 g. Caffeine is a CNS stimulating psychoactive substance - methylxanthine alkaloid (trimethylxanthine with a purine base). For coffee trees, this substance serves as a natural defense against pests and acts as a pesticide that can paralyze and kill insects. And for beneficial pollinating insects, the same caffeine increases the number of offspring.
In addition, coffee beans contain derpentol, cafestol and kahweol - terpene organic compounds, derivatives of geranyl pyrophosphate. These substances have an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect.
Physiological activity and powerful antibacterial action are also inherent in such phenolic compounds as caffeic acid and 3-caffeoylquinic acid, better known as chlorogenic acid.
Coffee has antioxidant properties due to the presence of a free radical scavenger, which helps neutralize oxidation reactions. It is also a gentle exfoliant, which improves blood circulation and helps normalize lipid metabolism in skin cells. In addition, coffee has the same pH level as our skin. So a simple mask based on natural ground coffee (instant coffee is not suitable!) and even a mask made from coffee grounds will help make your skin fresher and smoother.
And here are some recipes that you should definitely try.
Face mask with coffee and honey
This mask has a triple effect on any skin type: coffee is an antioxidant and a soft exfoliant, and honey is a natural moisturizer. Both ingredients should be taken in equal quantities (a tablespoon each) and mixed very well into a homogeneous mass. The mask is applied to the face, kept for 20 minutes and washed off.
If your skin tends to be oily, you can add half a teaspoon of lemon juice, and if it is dry, add as much almond oil or a pharmacy oil solution of vitamin A.
Mask of sour cream and coffee
Normal and dry skin will perceive this sour cream and coffee mask as smoothing and softening. You will definitely see for yourself: it is enough to keep a mixture of a tablespoon of fat sour cream and a tablespoon of ground coffee on your face for 20-25 minutes.
But if you have combination skin, then separate a third of the resulting mass into a separate bowl and add a teaspoon of ground oatmeal; this part will need to cover the shiny areas of the face or areas with enlarged pores.
It is recommended to replace sour cream with low-fat yogurt or kefir, and then you will get a wonderful “multifunctional” mask for oily skin.
Mask of ground coffee and olive oil
This mask nourishes pale and flabby skin, moisturizes dry skin and tones wrinkled skin. You just need to thoroughly mix ground coffee and olive oil in a 1:1 ratio.
Those who already use coffee for cosmetic purposes claim that this composition can also be applied to the skin around the eyes.
And if you do this simple procedure every day for a week, then you can get rid of dark circles and bags under the eyes for 1-1.5 months.
Coffee Mask for Acne
Of all the options for this mask, the easiest one to make is a coffee mask for acne with the addition of regular milk at room temperature. The proportions should be such that the mixture does not flow down the face during and after application.
The mask is kept until it dries completely, and the places where acne is concentrated can be covered with a second layer. Everything is washed off with cool water.
For acne scars, cosmetologists advise mixing ground coffee with cocoa powder (equal parts) and gradually adding milk, and if the skin is very oily, boiled water.
Coffee scrub mask
And, of course, you can use coffee scrub masks to cleanse your skin, which are also easy to prepare.
Mix 3 tablespoons of finely ground coffee with milk until a thick paste forms, apply the mixture to the face and neck in circular motions, massage the face for about another minute and leave for a quarter of an hour. After rinsing, apply a moisturizer to retain moisture in the upper layers of the epidermis.
Aging, dry skin will require adding a teaspoon of ground oatmeal and natural honey to this mixture. And for oily skin, the composition of the coffee mask-scrub can be supplemented with a pinch of baking soda.
Green Coffee Face Masks
The recipes for preparing green coffee face masks, as well as the specifics of their effect on the skin (taking into account the constituent components) are identical to masks using ground black coffee.
However, their antioxidant properties are more pronounced because green coffee beans contain more chlorogenic acid, which is partially broken down during roasting (and the result of this process is the unrivaled aroma of black coffee).
Green grains also contain higher levels of proteins and free amino acids - alanine, asparagine, leucine, etc.
As you can see, a coffee face mask is definitely beneficial and, what’s important, you have everything you need to make it in your kitchen.
