In the first part of his book, which outlines the theoretical foundations of the RTD methodology, Yu.S. Nikolaev quotes an ancient Greek philosopher and Hippocratic healer: "The wisdom is to know all that nature has done." The doctrine of therapeutic fasting presented by Nikolayev is based on this.
From the point of view of Yu.S. Nikolayev, “there is only one" disease "- the result of ignoring or ignorance of the laws of nature, in this case the laws of nutrition and starvation, of this single, dialectically interrelated process. This leads to toxemia, or clogging with poisons and slags of exchange origin. ” In order to fight the disease, it is first necessary to thoroughly cleanse the body. And we are talking not only about cleaning the blood, intestines or other organs (this is now spoken about no less than about weight loss diets), but also about cleansing various tissues of the body, which is simply impossible to do by external methods. Such a cardinal cleansing can only be carried out by the body itself, moving from exogenous (external) to endogenous (internal) nutrition at the expense of the body's resources.
Previously it was thought that the body’s resources were extremely poor (some nutritionists and doctors still adhere to this point of view), but the practice of wartime and modern research within the framework of the theory of unloading dietary therapy showed that this is not so. Our body is much more enduring and, when creating appropriate conditions, can independently cope with many diseases, including intractable ones.
According to Yu.S. Nikolayev's dosed therapeutic fasting can be used both for therapeutic purposes (alone or as part of a treatment regimen developed for a particular disease), and for the purpose of preventing diseases or their recurrence. By the way, Nikolaev himself, not only proclaiming the idea of treatment by hunger, but also putting it into practice, lived a long active life and left this world at the age of 93 years.
So much for theory. In practice, the RTD technique has been used in our country for several years at various medical centers. Dosed starvation in Nikolaev is a scientifically and practically justified system of treatment designed for inpatient conditions. At home, a person may experience a short-term 1-3-day regimen, but subject to prior full examination and the absence of contraindications to the appointment of therapeutic fasting.
Preparation for medical fasting across Nikolaev includes revision of feeding behavior. Most of the patients who are prescribed treatment by hunger are overweight and accustomed to a feeling of fullness, therefore, a sharp refusal to eat food can be a serious stress for many, which leads to a breakdown. To prevent such an outcome a week before we begin fasting, it is recommended to switch to a rational healthy diet, which provides for the abandonment of fatty and fried foods, smoked products, coffee, chocolate.
At the same time, you need to think about bad habits. Doctors strongly recommend quitting smoking and drinking alcohol. In some clinics, patients even take a receipt stating that they are familiar with the possible consequences of the influence of tobacco and alcohol on the body during fasting.
According to the method of Nikolaev, fasting should begin with cleaning procedures, which are then carried out regularly (daily or 2-3 times a week) during the discharge period. On the first day of fasting, you need in the morning to drink a saline laxative (usually Glauber's salt or magnesium sulfate, known to many as magnesia) at the rate of 0.5 g per 1 kg of patient weight.
If, due to various reasons, the patient’s intestine is excessively stretched, repeated washing of the rectum with the same Glauber's salt or chamomile extract will be more relevant. In the hospital, this effect gives hydrocolonotherapy, which is appointed 1 or 2 times a week.
It should be noted that cleansing the bowels, even during fasting, is one of the necessary daily procedures. In spite of the fact that no food enters the body from the outside, waste in it accumulates every day. When switching to endogenous nutrition, waste products should be considered as processing of own reserves with the formation of a substance resembling the original feces in newborns.
As for the duration of fasting in Nikolaev, it can be different depending on the diagnosis, age and condition of the patient. A short course of dry or wet fasting is 1-3 days. Fasting for more than 3 days involves the use of water. If a person adheres to dry (absolute) medical fasting for more than 3 days, then this can be done only under the supervision of a physician.
Y. S Nikolaev preference was given to wet starvation, which is more consistent with the physiological needs of the body, although in most cases it requires a longer duration of treatment with hunger. Full medical fasting courses can be short (1-3 days), medium (5-21 days) and long (more than 3 weeks) duration. Short-term courses usually do not have great therapeutic or recreational value, so they are rarely used (usually as a warm-up or preparation for a longer refusal of food).
It must be said that in order to achieve good results, it is desirable that the fasting period be at least 7-9 days, because it is during this period with full starvation that the transition to the stage of compensated acidosis is observed, i.e. The body is already completely transferred to endogenous nutrition. Nikolaev believed that the best course for fasting was a course of 21 days. Thus, the body after an acidotic crisis remains in stock for another 2 weeks for complete purification and the start of regeneration processes.
According to Nikolaev, medical fasting of 21 days or more (for example, up to 30 days) will not harm the body, since a loss of 12-18% of the total body weight does not lead to irreversible changes in the body. If you observe peace and minimize energy consumption (do not engage in active activities), then the person is quite normal withstands starvation even in 2 weeks.
The problem is that it is very difficult to create suitable conditions at home, unless the person is alone and lives independently. Otherwise, the sympathetic views of relatives, persuading them to eat at least a small piece and the temptations in the form of deliciously smelling and appealing food with their appearance cannot be avoided. In addition, it is very difficult to determine the line when starvation should be stopped according to indications, which are critical states and the inability of organs to cope with their function (especially kidneys and liver, which work as filters, suffer during starvation).
The most suitable conditions for fasting are created in hospitals of clinics, where during the entire unloading and some part of the recovery period the patient is under the supervision of medical staff, regular monitoring of vital organs is carried out, psychological assistance works. At the same time, only those who practice therapeutic fasting are in the ward, which excludes temptations in the form of food. Patients are trying to protect from the type of food and odors, which reduces the likelihood of failure.
In addition, RDT in clinics practicing the method of Yu.S. Nikolaev, includes not only refusal of food, but also some procedures, in particular:
- Exercise therapy (daily walks at least 2.5 hours a day and an individually selected set of exercises),
- bowel cleansing (enemas, colonic dialysis or hydrocolonotherapy with or without a sorbent),
- general and local massage, manual therapy, acupuncture,
- water procedures: swimming pool, sauna, bath, Charcot's douche, therapeutic baths, etc.,
- physiotherapy (UHF, diathermy, etc.),
- psychological discharge sessions.
Consider how the treatment of famine in Nikolaev (full medical fasting). The morning of the first and subsequent days of fasting begins with cleansing procedures, followed by a bath (shower) and massage (special pressure and warming). Only then can the patient go to breakfast.
It would seem, what breakfast do starving? However, the peculiarity of the Nikolaev system is the use of rosehip besides water. It is his patients and take for breakfast, and then for dinner. At lunch, the patient may drink plain water, Borjomi-type mineral water, or the same rosehip infusion.
After breakfast, followed by a half-hour rest, followed by a walk. The walk usually lasts until lunch. During it, patients are allowed to drink water in unlimited quantities. But usually it is limited to the standard 1.5-2 liters per day.
After lunch and day rest (about 1 hour), patients are prescribed various physical procedures every other day (according to indications). In their free time, they walk, do what they can, play board games, read, do creativity and handicrafts. In the evenings, as usual, they watch TV, and those who are younger and more resilient can even dance.
Before you go to sleep, patients drink water, rinse their throats and brush their teeth, which are considered mandatory procedures during fasting. Active cleansing goes all over the body, so there may be bad breath, plaque on the tongue and teeth, which must be removed daily by means of hygienic procedures.
Special attention is paid to the conditions of patients' night rest, which should maximally restore the forces spent during the day. Therefore, the chambers have good ventilation, access to fresh air. So that patients do not freeze, they are warmly covered, and by the end of fasting, when the chilliness rises, a heating pad is added under the blanket.
The period of fasting, initially set by the doctor, may subsequently change somewhat. Patients do not suffer from hunger for 3-4 days, their appetite decreases, their food reflexes die out, but they usually cannot completely get rid of their thoughts about food. Therefore, at some point, when the body is completely cleansed and the endogenous food reserves run out markedly, patients re appetite.
The appearance of appetite in combination with some other signs (the disappearance of plaque on the tongue and unpleasant smell from the mouth, fresh complexion, the almost complete absence of feces after the cleansing procedure) is an indication that fasting can be completed. True, often due to a number of reasons, the unloading period has to be completed ahead of time, which, incidentally, does not greatly reduce the effectiveness of therapeutic fasting.
The way out of fasting, according to the method of UDT, should be carried out in accordance with the existing pathology. So with a stomach ulcer and some diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the patient emerges from fasting on vegetable broths and rubbed, and then thoroughly chewed, viscous porridges. In other cases, a juice diet may be prescribed. In the future, the diet includes mashed baked vegetables and fruits (apples), soups, borscht, compotes, boiled fish, omelets, beef meatballs and much more.
