In the complex therapy of acute and chronic pyelonephritis, the system of therapeutic nutrition occupies far from the last place. Therefore, all patients with this diagnosis are prescribed a diet for pyelonephritis.
Pyelonephritis is an inflammatory disease of the kidneys of bacterial etiology, in which the internal (connective) tissues of the parenchyma and the structures of this organ (pelvis) are affected. The inflammatory process leads to functional failures in the kidneys: impaired urine outflow, stagnation of venous blood and lymph.
Diet for chronic pyelonephritis
Drug treatment of pyelonephritis, including the chronic form of this disease, is aimed at stopping the inflammatory process and restoring the normal passage of urine through the urethra. The effectiveness of treatment depends on many factors, among which an important role is played by a temporary reduction in the load on the kidney affected by inflammation, maintaining water-salt balance (to reduce arterial hypertension and edema), as well as stimulating the removal of nitrogenous waste from the body. This is what diet 7 for pyelonephritis is aimed at, which is prescribed to patients with chronic pyelonephritis (outside periods of exacerbation), as well as during remission of the acute form of pyelonephritis.
The daily protein content in this diet is limited to 80 g, fats - to 90 g. At the same time, at least 70-80% of proteins should be of animal origin, and up to 25% of fats should be vegetable. The daily amount of carbohydrates consumed in this diet for pyelonephritis can be 450-500 g (90-100 g of sugar). The total energy value of 4-5 meals a day does not exceed 2800-2900 kcal, and the permissible amount of table salt is limited to 5-6 grams. In addition, the volume of liquid consumed during the day (including in the first courses) is 1 liter. This amount is individually adjusted depending on the patient's daily diuresis.
When following the therapeutic diet 7 for pyelonephritis, you can drink weak black and green tea (with sugar or honey); compotes and kissels; rosehip decoction; milk, kefir and yogurt (low-fat). You cannot drink cocoa, coffee, carbonated and alcoholic drinks and mineral water with sodium.
Allowable daily intake: bread, pastries, cookies - no more than 400 g; chicken eggs - 2 pcs.; meat and poultry (lean boiled, baked or stewed) - 150 g. It is strictly forbidden to eat fatty and fried, spicy and smoked foods. Food should be boiled or stewed, and best of all - steamed.
Diet for acute pyelonephritis
At the onset of the disease, when pain is felt in the lower back and the temperature rises, the diet for acute pyelonephritis prescribes drinking at least 1.5-2 liters of liquid (water, compote, juice, tea with lemon, rosehip decoction) per day. As urologists note, this helps to flush the urinary tract.
However, during periods of exacerbation of the disease, the volume of liquid should be limited: the volume of fluid drunk per day should be equal to the volume of urine excreted.
The diet recommended by doctors for acute pyelonephritis, as well as the diet for exacerbation of pyelonephritis is a salt-free diet 7A, in which the minimum amount of proteins (20 g per day), the amount of fats is reduced to 80 g (of which 15% are vegetable fats), and the amount of carbohydrates is 350 g (including no more than 80 g of sugar). The caloric content of the daily diet is 2200 kcal, and the meal regimen is 5 or 6 times a day.
In case of acute pyelonephritis, you should not eat broths, spicy dishes, legumes, smoked and salted foods, canned foods, cakes and pastries, hot spices and seasonings (garlic, pepper, horseradish, mustard, vinegar), as well as coffee and chocolate.
Sometimes a diet for an exacerbation of pyelonephritis excludes the consumption of bread, meat and fish, since these products can increase acidosis (a violation of the acid-base balance of the body towards increased acidity).
Diet for pyelonephritis in children
The basic recommendations regarding what the diet for pyelonephritis in children should be are not much different from the diet for pyelonephritis in adults - mainly in quantitative parameters. For example, children aged three to six years can eat half a boiled egg per day, and older children - one egg. Although the portions of main dishes can be normal (according to age).
Doctors recommend eating more dairy and fermented milk products, cooking only lean meat (veal, rabbit, chicken) and low-fat sea fish. Boiled meat and fish should be given, but without broth.
The diet for pyelonephritis in children includes wheat bread, sugar, butter and vegetable oil, various cereals and pasta, vegetables, fruits, berries, juices and compotes. Children with pyelonephritis can also be given sweets, with the exception of cakes and pastries with cream and chocolate.
The basic cooking methods are the same as for the adult diet, and the number of meals should not be less than five times a day.
Diet for pyelonephritis during pregnancy
During pregnancy, women may develop so-called gestational pyelonephritis. Due to endocrine changes in the body or constant pressure on the ureter of the enlarged uterus, the usual physiological tone of the urinary tract and all urodynamics is disrupted. The result is excessively high pressure in the renal pelvis, which leads to pyelonephritis. In such a situation, a diet for pyelonephritis during pregnancy will help improve the condition of the expectant mother.
The total daily caloric content of this diet is from 2800 to 3000 kcal, and it should contain no more than 60 g of protein per day, with two thirds of them being animal proteins. The amount of fat is approximately 100-110 g per day, and the daily carbohydrate intake is 450 g. Meals should be fractional: small portions up to six times a day.
The diet for pyelonephritis during pregnancy should be practically salt-free (no more than 3 g of table salt per day) and include such products as: eggs, lean boiled meat, low-fat milk and fermented milk products, cereal porridges, vegetables (except celery, spinach and sorrel), fruits and berries (except black currants, melons and peaches). It is forbidden to eat meat, fish and mushroom broths, spicy, salty and canned dishes, sausages and smoked meats, chocolate and spices.
A diet for cystitis and pyelonephritis, that is, when, in parallel with kidney inflammation, an infection affects the bladder, should exclude all spices, onions, garlic, hard cheeses, fish, legumes, radishes, turnips, tomatoes, nuts, sour fruits (including citrus fruits), and chocolate.

Recipes for dishes for pyelonephritis
The rules of therapeutic nutrition for kidney pathologies, including acute and chronic forms of pyelonephritis, recommend limiting the consumption of salt and food rich in purines (meat broths, offal and canned meat). However, it is equally important to adhere to those cooking methods that, according to nutritionists, are most acceptable for cooking with this disease. The diet for pyelonephritis involves eating dishes prepared by boiling, baking, and lightly frying (in butter).
Recipes for dishes for pyelonephritis should take into account the limitation of animal proteins, provision of a caloric component of food (due to carbohydrates, vegetable and dairy proteins and fats), as well as sufficient content of vegetables and fruits in the diet.
Pumpkin soup
To prepare pumpkin puree soup, take 300 g of raw pumpkin, one potato, one small carrot and an onion per 1.5 liters of water. Peel all ingredients, chop finely (pumpkin and carrot can be grated) and put into boiling water in the following order with intervals of 3 minutes: potato, pumpkin, carrot, onion.
When all the vegetables are soft, remove the pan from the stove, blend the soup and add a tablespoon of butter or melted butter. When serving, you can sprinkle the soup with fresh herbs or grated cheese.
Vegetable cutlets
For 600-700 g of cabbage, take one raw egg, half a glass of milk and 2 tablespoons of semolina and butter. You will also need breadcrumbs (3-4 tablespoons) and 2 g of salt.
The cabbage should be finely chopped and stewed in milk with water until soft, then add semolina while stirring and cook for 5 minutes. When the cabbage has cooled, beat an egg into it and mix until smooth.
Then form the cutlets, roll each in breadcrumbs and bake in the oven or fry in butter in a frying pan. Tomato paste sauce with parsley or dill goes very well with such cutlets. Any vegetable cutlets from the pyelonephritis diet menu can be prepared using the same principle.
Rice casserole with apples
To prepare this dietary dish, you need 1.5 cups of rice, 3-4 apples, 1 egg, 2 tablespoons of butter, 150 g of sour cream, 100 g of sugar and a little ground cinnamon.
Rice should be cooked as for a side dish (i.e. put it in boiling water, not cold water). After all the water has drained from the boiled, drained and almost cooled rice, combine it with a tablespoon of butter and a beaten raw egg. Peel the apples, cut into medium pieces, mix with sugar and cinnamon. Then grease the saucepan with the remaining butter, put half the rice, put the apples on top of it in an even layer, and put the second part of the rice on top of the apples. Pour sour cream on top and put it in a preheated oven for half an hour.
To significantly improve the condition in kidney pathologies, it is necessary to limit the amount of protein, salt and liquid. For example, when consuming protein (meat) food, during the process of its assimilation in the body, exogenous nitrogenous waste products are formed - products of protein breakdown, the excretion of which is carried out by our kidneys. And when they are inflamed, it is difficult for them to cope with this "duty". And the main thing is that the diet for pyelonephritis is aimed at reducing the load on the diseased organ, which helps to cope with the disease faster.
