Traditionally, it was believed that men are less demanding about their own appearance and prefer simple and affordable means and methods of facial skin care. At present, men's interest in their appearance has definitely increased, and a dermatocosmetologist increasingly has to provide consultative and therapeutic assistance to male patients. The doctor's tactics depend on the correct diagnosis and timely external and systemic therapy of the underlying disease.
Anatomical and physiological characteristics of men's skin
The epidermis and dermis are thicker in men, so the skin is generally denser than in women. Subcutaneous fat is less pronounced, and the number of collagen fibers, on the contrary, is greater. Therefore, such clinical signs of skin aging as dryness, increased sensitivity, thinning, and the formation of superficial wrinkles appear later and are less pronounced. Deep wrinkles and folds in men form much later, but they are more pronounced or more difficult to correct. Men's skin is characterized by a large number of hair follicles and sebaceous glands and; a tendency to folliculitis, ingrown hairs and comedones. Men's skin is more often exposed to aggressive environmental factors, especially UV radiation. With improper care, just like women's skin, it becomes "sensitive" and dehydrated.
Recommendations for men's skin care at home
Regular, thorough, but gentle skin care is necessary, including daily cleansing, moisturizing and adequate photoprotection. When choosing cosmetics, preference should be given to medicinal cosmetics. Cleansing gels, mousses, foams or milk, tonic liquids and thermal waters, as well as moisturizing creams corresponding to the patient's skin type should be used as basic skin care products. Cosmetics intended for men's skin care must meet certain requirements: have an anti-inflammatory and keratolytic effect, cause a vascular reaction, do not change the acid-base state of the skin, and be non-comedogenic.
Principles of skin care for men in a cosmetology office
The choice of professional cosmetics is determined individually and should correspond to the skin type. All procedures in a cosmetology office begin with cleansing the skin of the face and neck, while it is desirable to minimize the use of sponges, cotton pads and rubbing movements. In the absence of contraindications, glycopilings with different concentrations of glycolic acid, mechanical peelings (scrub creams), preferably labeled "for sensitive skin", enzyme peelings and ultrasonic peeling can be recommended. As part of professional skin care, men can be recommended plastic massage with talc, therapeutic massage according to Jacquet or a short hygienic massage without rubbing movements. Preference should be given to moisturizing, cleansing, anti-inflammatory masks that relieve redness, have a calming, relaxing effect and are easily removed from the skin surface. The use of collagen sheets and new generation masks of the "fabric floats in water" type has a positive effect on men's skin. If cleansing is necessary, apply cleansing masks with cyanoacrylates. Before the facial cleansing procedure, it is not advisable to steam the skin with hot steam. The "cool hydration" procedure is recommended. Of the physiotherapeutic procedures, patients are prescribed microcurrent therapy, iontophoresis, ultrasound with various anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor agents, cryomassage, desincrustation, darsonvalization, myostimulation, cosmechanics, photorejuvenation procedures, aromatherapy and other relaxing procedures. Recently, various injection techniques have begun to be used in male cosmetology.
Vaporization, peeling brushing, vacuum cleaning and vacuum facial massage, as well as ultraviolet irradiation should be recommended with caution.
