February 4 is World Cancer Day, despite all the achievements in science and medicine today, the incidence of cancer continues to grow in the world, but still, noticeable results have been achieved in this area.
Experts note that the current situation with oncological morbidity can be called catastrophic with certainty, and every day thousands of new patients hear the diagnosis of "cancer". According to forecasts, the situation will change little in the future, and the number of patients will increase (almost double in 15 years), unless, of course, there are significant changes in the treatment and diagnosis of cancer.
Most people imagine the process of cancer treatment as a standard set of procedures - surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. Of course, for everyone and everyone, the words cancer, chemotherapy, etc. sound terrifying, especially for people who are faced with this problem for the first time.
Today, trials are being conducted on a new type of therapy called immuno-oncology, which involves the use of drugs that strengthen the immune system and thus help fight the disease.
This area has been studied by specialists for quite a long time, and the results are simply amazing, although so far in isolated cases. For example, in one of the small groups of patients, scientists managed to achieve complete regression of metastases, which for many years had not responded to any other type of therapy. But only a small number of patients responded positively to the treatment, and in order for immuno-oncology to become widely used as the main method of treatment, experts need to conduct more extensive studies.
But still, scientists were able to find out why some people's immune systems can recognize atypical cells and destroy them. As it turned out in the process of work, there are certain blockers of the immune response, but today scientists manage to cope with only a few of these blocking receptors, but there are a huge number of them and scientists still have a lot of work to do.
But already now we can declare a breakthrough in the field of cancer treatment.
According to experts, there are quite a lot of chances for a revolution in cancer treatment.
The new cancer treatment method has enormous potential and gives hope that medicine will be able to cure cancer, at least in some patients.
Today, early diagnosis plays an important role in the fight against cancer, since cancer in the early stages is more treatable and the patient has a high chance of recovery.
The WHO noted that a high percentage of cancer cases causes significant damage to the economy of any country. In 2010, more than $1 trillion was spent on cancer treatment in the United States alone, and the damage worldwide was equal to the same amount that year.
Reducing the incidence of cancer can be done through fairly simple and at the same time difficult to achieve measures – solving the problem of smoking and alcohol abuse. A number of experts emphasize that the trend towards obesity, which has been observed recently almost all over the world, also affects the number of cancer patients. The WHO calls on all countries to actively combat smoking, alcoholism and excess weight, in particular, by restricting advertising and raising prices.
