Journalists are the biggest drinkers of any profession. At least those in the British media and publishing industry do.
This was shown by the results of a study conducted by the British IT organization YouGov and the State Department of Health. The survey covered 1,400 people – workers in various fields.
It turns out that people in the media, publishing and entertainment sectors are the heaviest drinkers. They consume an average of 44 units of alcohol per week, which is almost double the maximum recommended amount (3-4 drinks per day for men and 2-3 drinks for women). Media workers are also the biggest wine consumers, drinking an average of one and a half bottles per week. Journalists and publishers do not deny themselves shots, liqueurs and spirits.
IT workers drink 34 drinks a week, with about 29% of respondents admitting that they are pressured to drink by their colleagues.
Drivers and teachers are the most abstinent in alcohol consumption – they drink 24 units a week.
The report makes no mention of MPs, but Britain's health minister says drink has become part of working life for many of his colleagues.
The study is supplemented by such sad statistics from the Department of Health: the number of liver transplants due to alcohol abuse has increased by 61% compared to 1994. Doctors recommend not drinking any alcohol at least two days a week, and also devoting your free time to sports in order to combat stress through physical activity.
