Many people happily start a new day with a cup of aromatic coffee and cheese sandwiches. And few could even imagine that cheese would be called a dangerous product for health.

Scientists say cheese is dangerous to health

Despite the fact that this raises eyebrows and even disbelief, experts warn that the level of salt in cheese is seriously worrying, because it may contribute to the epidemic of high blood pressure, which threatens heart attacks, strokes and, as a result, thousands of premature deaths every year.

Scientists at London's Wolfson Institute have found that cheddar cheese contains more salt than a packet of potato chips, while feta and halloumi contain more salt than seawater.

"Cheese products are saturated with fats. However, if you know the measure and do not abuse it, then there is no threat to human health. But when salt is added to fats, then it becomes unsafe. This puts the health of people who include cheese in their daily diet at risk," comments Professor and co-author of the study Graham MacGregor.

Experts say that a person is not recommended to eat more than six grams of salt per day. Therefore, the maximum amount of cheese that can be consumed per day should be measured based on the amount of salt in its composition, that is, the more salt, the less cheese you should eat.

In particular, some types of cheese contain the following amount of salt: Roquefort - 1 gram, Halloumi contains 0.81 grams, and feta cheese contains 0.76 grams of salt. For comparison, 30 milliliters of sea water contains 0.75 grams of salt. It turns out that these cheeses surpassed even salt water in terms of salt content. The experts made these conclusions based on a review of a hundred supermarkets and an analysis of several types of cheese.

Naturally, children should not be given large amounts of cheese, or carefully read the label and choose the varieties with the least amount of salt. Experts do not recommend giving up cheese altogether.
