Almost half of those who suffer from sex addiction first encountered the problem before the age of 16, according to a new study by psychotherapist Paula Hall and a team of scientists.

"We owe much of this phenomenon to easy access to pornography on the internet and inadequate sex education," said lead author Dr Hall.

Experts say these figures are supported by a survey that shows 40% of teenagers watched pornography before the age of 12. At the same time, 90% admit that this circumstance makes them feel ashamed.

The authors of the study say that the figures presented are the result of the direct influence of two factors: insufficient information among teenagers about sexual relations and the availability of pornographic material on the Internet.

In addition, it turned out that half of the people surveyed were subjected to abuse and violence in childhood.

This may provide an explanation as to why some people develop and develop sexual addiction and what exactly is behind this addiction.

Dr. Hall defines sex addiction in its simplest form: uncontrollable sexual behavior that can impact not only the sufferer's life, but also the people around him or her.

Experts emphasize the difference between male and female attitudes toward sexual addiction. Many more men seek professional help than women – 57.3% of the stronger sex and only 38.3% of women. However, no matter who has become addicted to sex, the consequences of this condition are disastrous. Viewing pornographic materials can trigger addiction.

Most of the addicted women explained their sexual behavior by the “desire to be desired.” Men, however, cited the desire to experience thrills as the main reason.

65% of respondents suffered from low self-esteem and almost half had mental health problems. Almost half of respondents experienced a breakup with a partner because of their addiction to sex, and a quarter admitted that this disorder provokes problems in their sex life.

When men and women surveyed were asked what had the greatest influence on their development of sex addiction, most responded that accessibility and lack of adequate information played the main role.

"The reason is that today's teenagers have absolutely free access to pornographic materials. A seemingly innocent hobby can lead to serious consequences and make a person addicted," comments Dr. Hall.

Dr. Paula Hall and her team conducted the research by surveying 350 people with problems of excessive sexual desire.
