The overwhelming majority of officials, due to the high level of counterfeit medicines in Ukraine, buy medical drugs in EU countries. This was stated by the People's Deputy of Ukraine Valeriy Konovalyuk.
"The overwhelming majority of officials buy medical drugs in EU countries and they talk about it quite freely. Instead of actually controlling the quality of drugs through the activities of our regulatory bodies. Officials understand that the drug sold in Ukrainian pharmacies may be of poor quality and cause certain harm to health," added V. Konovalyuk.
The people's deputy also added that the Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov formed a Council headed by the First Vice Prime Minister Andriy Klyuyev, which will directly deal with the problem of counterfeit medicines.
"By the way, the creation of this Council is justified by the fact that one of the members of the Cabinet of Ministers barely survived after taking low-quality and counterfeit drugs. That is, no one is immune from such a situation. This is already a problem of national security of Ukraine and today there are all the mechanisms to overcome this terrible and immoral problem," the MP added.
It should be noted that on October 12, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych signed the Law "On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine Regarding the Prevention of Counterfeiting of Medicines", which will enter into force after publication.
The law provides for criminal liability in the form of imprisonment for up to 3 years, and if the crime is repeated - up to 5 years, for the manufacture, storage and sale of counterfeit medicines.
