Those who sleep less than 6 hours a day are at risk of having a stroke, scientists have found. Moreover, even completely healthy people are at risk. During the study, scientists from Alabama observed 5,000 patients aged 45 to retirement age for three years. The participants in the experiment were divided into five groups depending on how many hours a day they slept. They were asked to report on their health every six months.

It found that people who slept less than six hours a night were more likely to experience symptoms such as numbness or weakness on one side of the body, dizziness, vision loss, or a sudden inability to express themselves verbally or in writing.

Scientists have concluded that lack of sleep affects the risk of stroke more than age, weight and high blood pressure.
