A group of chemicals known as phthalates significantly increase the risk of diabetes. These chemicals are found in high doses in many cosmetics, such as hairspray, nail polish, soap, and shampoo. Women who have high levels of these chemicals are more likely to develop diabetes than those who have lower levels. There is also a link between high levels of phthalates and insulin resistance in women who do not have the disease.

Hairspray May Cause Diabetes

The findings suggest that chemicals in cosmetics are disrupting blood sugar metabolism in humans, according to a study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital. However, the researchers say the data was analyzed only at one time, meaning further testing will be needed to confirm the findings. Importantly, phthalates are also found in a wide range of medications and equipment.

The researchers looked at urine samples from 2,350 women, 217 of whom had type 2 diabetes. Those with extremely high levels of phthalates in their urine were twice as likely to have diabetes as those with low levels. Women with moderate levels of phthalates in their bodies had a 70% increased risk of developing diabetes. Studies in laboratory animals also showed that phthalates increased blood glucose levels. Phthalates likely indirectly increased the risk of diabetes because they can alter fat metabolism, leading to insulin resistance.
