The Danish Meteorological Institute is concerned about the abnormal climate indicators at the North Pole, which exceed standard values by 20 times. Despite the fact that the increase in temperature was provoked by warm winds, scientists note that this has happened for the first time in the entire history of observations. According to one of the employees of the French laboratory that studies the climate, winds from Africa and Western Europe bring warm air to the Arctic, which worsens the already difficult situation that developed at the beginning of the year due to the El Niño effect (a global change in the temperature of the surface layers of water in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a change in the direction of currents).
Scientists are concerned that warm temperatures at the North Pole are causing glaciers to melt, while normally thousands of square kilometers of ice should freeze every day. In October of this year, the minimum area of ice accumulation was recorded for the entire observation period – just over 6 million km2.
But scientists are sure that the reason for the warming in the Arctic is not only the greenhouse effect. The so-called El Niño effect and the direction of the winds play an important role in this process. Scientists note that El Niño leads to a shift of heated surface waters in the Pacific Ocean to the east. Ice in the Northern Hemisphere is melting at an astonishing rate; according to the latest analysis of meteorological data, melting has been occurring at its maximum rate in recent years.
Experts from meteorological centers have found that over the past month, the air temperature above the ice peaks has been about 10 0 C above normal. At times, the temperature reached 0 0 C, while normally during this period it should be around -20 0 C. As already noted, such air temperatures have been recorded for the first time in the entire history of observations.
Perhaps the melting of glaciers and abnormally high temperatures in the Arctic are due to the fact that this year has become the hottest in all the years that meteorologists have been monitoring weather changes on our planet. The Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization noted in his interview that it is too late for people to take any steps to prevent global warming. Climate change and its consequences are happening at a much faster rate than expected, and climate change causes more complex processes than researchers could have expected.
Experts from the World Meteorological Organization have found in their research that the temperature on our planet has already risen by more than 1 0 C. Researchers have noted in their conclusions that temperatures above 1.5 0 C will be extremely dangerous for both the planet and its inhabitants. Already now, at the UN World Conference on Global Warming on our planet, experts have discussed issues related to the increase in average seasonal temperatures. According to experts, such fluctuations lead to an increase in mortality, in particular, from cardiovascular diseases.
