Men in Britain have weighed an average of eight kilograms in 14 years, reports Sky News. These data were obtained in a study conducted by a team of specialists led by Peter Scarborough of Oxford University. A report on their work is published in the journal British Journal of Nutrition. The Scarborough group calculated the average increase in the weight of residents of the UK for the period from 1986 to 2000. According to the study, the weight of British men increased by 7.7 kilograms. The British, in turn, recovered an average of 5.4 kilograms. Scientists also analyzed the caloric intake of food consumed by the British in the specified period of time. Based on the data obtained, they calculated the expected increase in the weight of the male and female population of the country. The researchers found that, in accordance with the increase in the amount of energy consumed from food, the British were supposed to weigh on average 4.7 kilograms. At the same time, the average weight of British women was to increase by 6.4 kilograms. According to Scarborough, the findings suggest that the cause of male obesity in the UK is not only the more calories they consume, but also the lack of physical activity. According to the National Health Service of Great Britain, 24 percent of British men and 25 percent of women are obese. Overweight are 32 percent Britons and 42 percent of male residents.
