Researchers from the Fainshtein Institute found that beans, which are widely used in Chinese cuisine, protect against such a dangerous disease as sepsis - an infectious disease that develops against the background of a decrease in the defenses of the body and develops as a systemic inflammatory reaction when a blood infection occurs. In the people this disease is spread under the name "blood poisoning".
It was found that DNA proteins and HMGB1 protein from the group of nuclear nonhistin proteins HMG mediate inflammation.
Inflammation is necessary to maintain good health - without inflammation, wounds and infections, will never heal. However, persistent inflammation can lead to tissue and organ damage, and diseases such as sepsis. Annually sepsis affects about 750 000 Americans, from 28 to 50 percent of them die. The country's healthcare system allocates $ 17 billion a year for the treatment of this disease.
Infection occurs when infectious agents (unicellular fungi or bacteria ) or their toxins enter the bloodstream. Confronting the body of the infection causes inflammation. Scientists from the Fainshtein Institute came to the conclusion that the extract of mung beans (species: Mash, genus: Vigna), which are widely used in Indian and Chinese cuisine, and also for medical purposes, can reduce the activity of the HMGB1 protein.
This was clearly demonstrated by the experiment that the experts conducted on mice. Survival of rodents increased from 29.4 to 70 percent (P <0.05).
"Many traditional medicinal herbs are successfully used in the treatment of various inflammatory diseases, and now we have confirmed the therapeutic potential of another drug, the extract of mung beans," the researchers say. "Mash extract had a positive effect on mice infected with sepsis, which means that people with the same diagnosis can have similar effects. Of course, more research is needed to prove the safety and effectiveness of using the components of this extract. "
