British scientists proposed to prevent the development of cancer by using popular and cheap medicines. Two independent studies have proven the efficacy of using aspirin and tamoxifen to prevent colon cancer and breast cancer, respectively.

Scientists under the direction of John Bern (Newcastle University) for 4 years, observed 860 carriers of genes, which are responsible for the development of hereditary forms of colon cancer. 50% of the group took 600 mg of aspirin, the other half took placebo. Results of the study showed that the disease developed in 19 participants from the group who received aspirin, and 34 - from the control group.

At the same time, scientists led by Jack Cusick (Institute for Preventive Medicine named after Wolfson, London) monitored women who, as a result of mammography, found an increase in the density of breast tissue. Researchers found that within 10 years after the survey, these women were 4 times more likely to develop breast cancer than healthy women.

Jack Cusick pointed out that the use of tamoxifen, which is an antiestrogenic drug, leads to a decrease in the density of breast tissue . According to him, the use of tamoxifen reduces the risk of developing breast cancer by 63%.

In conclusion, the scientist said that the current screening programs for early detection of breast cancer using mammography should be combined with the prophylactic use of antiestrogenic drugs.
