National minorities in the United States have a chance to become a majority in the foreseeable future. According to a new report by the Brookings Institute for the past ten years, the white population of the United States has increased by only one two-tenth percent.
According to researchers, in forty-two of the hundred largest cities and their suburbs, the US population has declined, and in 22 such cities, national minorities have already become the majority. "There are more white people in the country, of course, there are still more white people, even in large cities, more than a white population - 57%, but this decrease from 71 percent in 1990 and from 64 percent in 2000," says Brookings senior urban policy expert Ilya Frey.
In cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Washington, the population is already predominant, which was previously considered a national minority. Mostly, they are from Latin America. "The list will very soon be replenished with Dallas, Orlando and Atlanta, and until the next census, Chicago and Austin will join them," Frey said. At the moment, more than 310 million people live in the USA. According to forecasts, in forty years the population will grow to 440 million. 82 percent of this growth will be provided by immigrants and their children. "Over the next ten years, we will see a decline in the proportion of the white population in the workforce, mainly due to the fact that white people who were born during the period of a sharp increase in the birth rate, the so-called baby boomers, will retire. People from Latin America and Asia, "Frey specified.
However, according to the researcher, the white population should not worry. The new workforce will not only provide retiring baby boomers, but also take care of the country's economic growth.
