Senile dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, according to some reports in the world of this disorder affects more than 47 million people and the number of patients continues to increase every year. To date, this neurodegenerative disease is considered incurable and develops mainly in older people.
Recent research has shown that Alzheimer's disease can be prevented, and also help patients with an early form of the disease. An international group from the United States and Australia developed a drug that is able to protect against the development of senile dementia. According to researchers, the vaccine is the world's first drug of this kind, which acts against tau proteins and beta-amyloid clusters in the brain, causing irreversible processes.
Tests of the new drug showed that after the introduction of the vaccine the immune system is activated and the development of antibodies that destroy certain proteins in the brain begins.
According to one of the researchers from the public university of South Australia, this vaccine is suitable for the prevention of Alzheimer's and its peculiarity is that it acts equally effectively against both tau proteins and beta amyloids, the surplus of which is the cause of the development of senile dementia .
The new drug scientists have already tested on rodent cell cultures, and testing of a vaccine involving humans is expected to begin in a couple of years. Despite the successful results of the first tests, it is impossible to say with 100% confidence that the vaccine will be effective and appear in the clinical practice of doctors.
Studies of senile dementia caused by various disorders have been carried out for many years, and some scientists have managed to achieve good results in this area. For example, it was found that there are some signs that indicate the onset of Alzheimer's disease. According to the researchers, the first alarm bell of the disease is a decrease in blood flow to the brain, while other studies have shown that an increase in the level of amyloid protein and its congestion in the brain indicates the onset of irreversible processes.
The scientists published their new work in one of the well-known scientific publications, where they showed that with the progression of senile dementia, the brain becomes infected with beta amyloid clusters, cerebral circulation, glucose metabolism is disturbed, in addition, atrophy of about 80 parts in the brain is observed.
Another team of researchers developed a special program that helps to identify senile dementia in the initial stages. With the help of the program, scientists can assume the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease.
According to the World Health Organization, about 8 million new cases of senile dementia caused by this or that pathology are diagnosed every year in the world, up to 70% of all cases occur in Alzheimer's disease.
