The Governor of Mississippi has signed an order to release sisters Gladys and Jamie Scott, who are serving life sentences for armed robberies. A condition of their early release is that one of the prisoners agrees to donate a kidney for the other. Gladys and Jamie Scott were sentenced to life in prison in 1994. The sisters' case became widely known due to the active work of black rights organizations, which believed that the punishment handed down to the women was unreasonable or excessive. As Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour explained, the reason for the early release of one of the prisoners is her serious illness. Jamie Scott, 38, suffers from chronic kidney failure and requires regular hemodialysis. A mandatory condition for the release of Gladys Scott, 36, is her agreement to donate a kidney for her sister. If Gladys refuses to donate, the decision to release her may be annulled. The governor's statement also noted that the continued detention of Jamie Scott, who needs medical care, is associated with large expenditures from the state budget. According to the investigation, the Scott sisters helped a gang of street robbers by luring random passersby into an ambush, where armed accomplices were waiting for them. The criminals managed to rob two black men, taking a total of $11 from them. The convicted women themselves claimed that the testimony against them was obtained under pressure.
