Humanity needs a great green technical revolution in order to avoid catastrophic consequences of climate change and environmental degradation. This is stated in the "Survey of the world economic and social situation for 2011", which was presented to the delegates of the session of the UN Economic and Social Council in Geneva.
According to the UN News Center, the authors of the study argue that without a radical coup in technology comparable to the first industrial revolution, the world will not be able to end poverty and hunger. Experts call for large investments in environmentally friendly energy technologies, sustainable methods of agriculture and forestry, creation of climate-proof infrastructure and technologies for increasing biodegradability of waste.
Presenting the report, UN Deputy Head Sha Zukang recalled that by 2050 the world's population will increase by two billion people who will need access to energy and food. He said that it is necessary to accelerate the development and use of energy technologies that are sustainable.
We are talking about the production of more energy-efficient cars, computers, heating and other equipment that is powered by clean energy. According to Sha Zukang, considering the rate of climate change, there is not much time left to implement this transformation - only three or four decades.
