Scientists are sure that two cups of fresh cocoa a day can provide good memory, reaction speed and brain performance. Recent studies conducted by American neurologists have proven that cocoa significantly improves blood circulation and, accordingly, blood supply to the brain.

The Americans conducted a series of studies involving more than 60 elderly volunteers. The experiment involved people over 65 years of age who did not suffer from acquired dementia associated with age. The results of the study showed that elderly people who regularly consume cocoa can maintain memory and brain function for a long time. Scientists believe that cocoa has such an effect due to its ability to influence blood circulation.

The experiment consisted of scientists asking volunteers, whose average age was 72, to drink at least two cups of cocoa daily for several months. The participants were divided into two groups, one of which consumed cocoa with a high content of flavonoids, and the other with a low content. The effect of cocoa on the human body was previously studied by British specialists, who came to the conclusion that substances contained in cocoa beans can affect blood circulation.

Early studies by British scientists have shown that flavonoids (substances of the polyphenol class – natural plant antioxidants) have a positive effect on the performance of the brain and human memory. Among the natural sources of flavonoids, experts highlight green tea, dark beer, citrus fruits and, of course, cocoa beans.

At the beginning of the experiment, scientists used magnetic resonance imaging to determine that 17 out of 60 people had circulatory problems. After the experiment was over, repeated analyses were conducted, which showed that 85% of volunteer participants had improved blood flow to the brain. The changes mainly affected those people who initially had circulatory problems, since among healthy people, improvements were seen in only 37%.

Harvard scientists commented on the results of the study as follows: “At the moment, modern medicine needs new information about the possible influence of blood circulation on the performance of the brain and on the preservation of memory in older people.”

The head of the experiment is confident that the results of the study have proven the fact that food products rich in natural antioxidants can affect the functioning of the cardiovascular system and the blood supply to the brain, which in turn is responsible for the preservation of memory and clear thinking. Of course, it is too early to say that cocoa can cure existing diseases associated with blood circulation. According to scientists, more than one experiment should be conducted in order to determine which substances and in what quantities should be consumed by elderly people in order to prevent diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, acquired dementia, memory loss or circulatory disorders.

Problems with the cardiovascular system and blood circulation often become the root cause of many dangerous diseases, so scientists are currently researching possible preventive measures.
