Every year on June 14, many countries celebrate World Blood Donor Day. This year, the World Health Organization has proposed the theme “Safe Blood to Save Mothers,” calling for measures to improve access to blood, which is needed to save the lives of thousands of women in labor. Every day, hundreds of women die from one or another pregnancy or labor complication. The main cause of death is severe bleeding. However, in many countries around the world (and developed countries are no exception), access to safe donor blood supplies and measures for its transfusion are the main problem.

WHO has recommended that countries and all partners working in the field of blood transfusion services prepare a range of activities that can ensure timely access to donor blood to reduce maternal mortality. The range of activities may include meetings, conferences, media work, and the publication of scientific articles in journals that will help to attract attention and highlight this year's theme.

The purpose of the annual Blood Donor Day is to improve knowledge about the importance of donated blood and its products, and to recognize donors who voluntarily and freely donate their blood to save the lives of thousands of people.

The mortality rate of women during childbirth is quite high, the vast majority of deaths occur in civilized countries. The highest mortality rate is observed among young mothers (under 15 years).

Heavy bleeding during or after childbirth often results in the death of the mother, serious illness or disability.

WHO recommends that countries with high maternal mortality rates take all necessary measures to improve access to donor blood supplies in health facilities.

In addition, educational work is needed among the population on the topic of how safe blood can save a mother’s life.

In 2014, Sri Lanka was the host country for the events dedicated to the theme of World Blood Donor Day this year. The country is holding events to strengthen blood donation, which contributes to safe and sufficient blood supplies and blood products for women in labor.

The large-scale event took place on June 14 in Colombo.

Blood transfusions save thousands of lives and improve health. However, most patients do not have immediate access to donor blood. Health policy in each country should be aimed at ensuring adequate blood supplies and improving access to it.

According to the World Health Organization recommendation, all activities aimed at collecting, testing, processing, storing and distributing donor blood should be coordinated at the national level. Such activities should be based on relevant laws to promote the use of standards and ensure consistency regarding blood quality and safety.
