Up to half a million Russian citizens die every year from diseases caused by smoking, doctors say.
"In total, 43.9 million adults smoke in Russia, 60.2% of them are men and 21.7% are women, the average Russian smokes 17 cigarettes a day. Every year, from illnesses related to tobacco consumption, from 350 thousand to 500 thousand Russian citizens, "- on Thursday in the press service of Rospotrebnadzor.
"Russia ranks first in the world in terms of tobacco consumption," Rospotrebnadzor reported, citing research from the World Health Organization.
The report, circulated on the eve of the "World No Tobacco Day", which is celebrated on May 31, states that almost 35% of Russians are exposed to tobacco smoke at work, 90.5% - visiting bars and almost 80% - visiting restaurants, forced to inhale tobacco smoke. In this case, substances contained in tobacco smoke have toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic properties.
"The greatest increase in tobacco consumption over the past 5 years - 3 times - was registered among women, children and adolescents. During pregnancy, more than 40% of women who smoke continue to smoke, which leads to an increase in the number of children born to patients, growth in prematurity and early termination of pregnancy" , - reported in Rospotrebnadzor.
"Promotion of tobacco products to the Russian market and further increase in the number of its consumers is facilitated by low taxes and prices for tobacco products, active tobacco advertising, low awareness of the population about the dangers of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke per person, insufficient level of preventive work and medical care directed to refuse from its consumption, "the department said.
