Recently, the Russian Government made a decision on mandatory genomic registration of dangerous criminals.

Back in 2009, a law was passed in Russia on the creation of a DNA bank for crime scenes. Today, Russian law enforcement officers have 20,000 DNA samples. However, no genetic material was collected from the convicted persons themselves.

Now, according to the Decree of October 11, 2011, persons serving sentences for serious and especially serious crimes, as well as rapists, maniacs and pedophiles will be required to give blood for DNA analysis to prison doctors. Regional laboratories will decipher the samples, and the results will be sent to the federal database of genomic information.

Human rights activists believe that after collecting data from prisoners currently serving their sentences, we can hope for a review of many cases. Unless, of course, material evidence was destroyed. In the US, conducting a repeat DNA test still allows us to find people who were wrongly convicted. However, experts say that such a procedure is not yet provided for in Russia.

According to preliminary information, the data of living citizens is planned to be stored until they reach the age of 100 or upon their death. The storage period for DNA of unidentified corpses or unidentified persons found at the crime scene is no more than 70 years.
