Retirement is not only the end of professional activity, but also a change in a person's entire life. It is necessary to prepare for this event in advance. When retiring, you can be satisfied with what you have done in your life or, on the contrary, regret that you have to leave your job. Therefore, working in retirement has a number of advantages.

Regardless of when retirement occurs (at 50, 60 or 70 years old), saying goodbye to work can be fraught with complications. Retirement stress is accompanied by a reluctance to participate in social life, a decrease in interest in other people and often leads to a decrease in intellectual activity. A feeling of uselessness and the lack of a clear routine can provoke a loss of self-esteem, a bad mood or withdrawal. “Withdrawal into oneself”, in turn, often leads to egocentrism, “fixation” on memories. A person begins to listen intensely to himself, his body.

An active optimist will more easily endure changes associated with retirement and regain balance in life. The desire to work is the main need of a healthy person.

Working in retirement helps develop many of a person's abilities, makes them needed by others, gives meaning to life. The great 18th century philosopher Voltaire, in his ninth decade of life, believed that the older a person becomes, the more he needs to work, because it is better to die than to drag himself through life like an old man (to work means to live!).

Having reached retirement age, it is important to continue working, but in accordance with your health. Heavy physical work in retirement is contraindicated for older people, about which Aristotle said that it dries out the body and leads to premature old age. It can be said that moderate work is healthy stress, and excessive work due to its volume, content or, conversely, due to the fact that it does not use all the capabilities of a person is unhealthy stress.

After 65-70 years, you should not strive for a job that requires a lot of attention or quick decision-making. It is good if your retirement job is close to home and you can walk to it in no more than 15-25 minutes.

If a pensioner does not work anywhere, he still needs to keep himself busy. It is useful to make a list of things to do for the day, even if you cannot complete everything.

Physical work that is feasible has a beneficial effect on the body. Many older people enjoy working in their garden plots. Gardening in retirement requires following these recommendations.

  • It is forbidden to work if you feel unwell. As soon as an elderly person feels unwell while working: he has a headache or feels unwell - he must immediately stop working and take a break.
  • It is not recommended to work during hot hours of the day. It is best to work in the garden before 11 am and after 5 pm.
  • A hat should always be worn on the head, and clothing made of well-ventilated fabrics (cotton or linen) that does not restrict movement should cover the body as much as possible.
  • You should not stay in one position for a long time, especially in a bent position. It is possible to use benches of different sizes for working with plantings.
  • It is important to take long breaks from work and always have emergency medications recommended by your doctor on hand.
  • Never work at height without safety equipment.
  • It is not advisable to stay in the garden alone for a long time, since if your health suddenly worsens, there will be no one to help.

Due to the difficult economic situation in the country, many people who have retired are forced to look for an additional source of income, since the pension accrued to them by the state is often not enough. In addition, lonely pensioners communicate with their colleagues at work. This has a positive effect on them, maintaining social ties.

Working in retirement will not only replenish the pensioner's budget, but also (with a reasonable workload) strengthen his health. It is necessary to remember that all long-livers worked until the last days of their lives, remaining in sound mind and having good physical condition until old age.
