A voluntary sterilization campaign has begun in the Indian state of Rajasthan, with all volunteers entering a lottery with a car as the main prize.

The voluntary sterilization campaign is aimed at combating overpopulation in the region.

As part of the campaign, all Indians who undergo sterilization before September 30, 2011, will be entered into a special lottery. The main prize in the draw will be a Tata Nano, which is considered the cheapest car in the world.

Motorcycles, 21-inch TVs and even food processors will also be entered into the raffle. Regional authorities estimate that the lottery will attract about six thousand people.

The population of Jhunjhunu district has increased by 11.8% in the last decade and now stands at about 2.1 million. The district administration hopes that the lottery will help it reach its target of 21,000 sterilizations a year.

According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), India's total fertility rate is 2,588 births per woman. Although this figure has fallen by half since 1990, experts believe that by 2030, the number of Indians will exceed that of China.
