Scientists from Spain have recently discovered that prostate cancer treatment has always been close at hand. As it turns out, to avoid developing this unpleasant disease, a man needs to regularly drink red wine in small quantities.
The benefits of red wine for the prevention of prostate diseases have been known for a long time. In the Netherlands, experts have found that if you drink 15 grams or more of wine daily, the likelihood of developing prostate cancer decreases by 18%. Similar results were also obtained in other studies, of which at least seventeen were conducted.
Research conducted in the 90s showed that the skin of dark grapes contains a large amount of resveratrol (a polyphenolic compound), thanks to which red wine is known for its powerful protective properties. White grapes contain much less of this compound. Resveratrol is also found in raspberries and peanuts, which are included in the diet for diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Now resveratrol can be found in pharmacies as a biologically active food supplement.
A new study was conducted by American scientists, which showed that red wine significantly reduces the likelihood of developing prostate cancer, especially its aggressive form. During the research project, more than 700 patients who were diagnosed with prostate cancer for the first time were interviewed. Absolutely healthy men were taken as a control group. Participants were aged 40 to 64 years. The specialists also took into account the amount of alcohol consumption, risk factors (smoking, heredity, etc.). As a result, the scientists came to the conclusion that men who drank an average of 3-4 glasses of red wine per week were 50% less likely to develop a malignant tumor (while the risk of developing an aggressive form of prostate cancer was reduced by 60%).
At this stage, the scientists plan to conduct a new study to confirm the results of the previous one. They have also already planned laboratory studies to study the effect of resveratrol on prostate cancer in rodents.
According to available data, resveratrol removes free radicals from the body, blocks enzymes that promote the growth of cancer cells, reduces the level of male sex hormones that provoke tumor growth, and accelerates the process of destruction and liberation of the body from cancer cells.
Now scientists are sure that drinking red wine in reasonable doses is an excellent prostate cancer prevention. Some studies have shown that the components of red wine (according to scientists, polyphenols) prevent the growth of cancer cells, and also destroy them to some extent. The scientists' words are confirmed by the fact that prostate cancer is extremely rarely diagnosed in men in the Mediterranean, where red wine is a well-known and favorite drink. In addition, residents of Mediterranean countries eat more fruits and vegetables, less meat, while they consume red wine twice as much as northern Europeans.
