Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov demands that heads of regional state administrations focus as much as possible on ensuring environmental control in the regions. At the same time, the head of government emphasized that the activities of heads of regional state administrations will be assessed not only by economic indicators, but also by the state of the environmental situation in the region. He stated this during a conference call at the Ministry of Ecology.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the environmental situation in the region is an important component of assessing the quality of life, along with such indicators as housing availability, adequate nutrition, job security, etc.
"I want to draw the attention of the heads of regional state administrations to such topics as illegal logging, unauthorized dumps, illegal construction, pollution of water and air above the standards - these issues, along with the regional economy, along with the social sphere, along with security. All these topics are central for you, for which the government will be very seriously held accountable," said Mykola Azarov.
The Prime Minister stressed that the environmental situation in Ukraine remains difficult, and the head of government is particularly concerned that green areas in industrial cities are shrinking, illegal deforestation is increasing, and water bodies are being polluted and destroyed.
"The environmental situation in Ukraine, frankly speaking, remains difficult; the anthropogenic and technogenic load is several times higher than in developed countries," said the head of government.
At the same time, Mykola Azarov emphasized that the number of unauthorized dumps in the country is growing. According to the Prime Minister, 30 thousand unauthorized dumps were identified last year, occupying an area of more than a thousand hectares. To solve these problems, the government will introduce control both at the central level and at the local level. In addition, Mykola Azarov proposes to involve public organizations in monitoring the environmental situation in the country.
"There are many problems and it is necessary to introduce constant control in real time in each area. Moreover, modern technologies provide such an opportunity. Such control will be carried out both at the central and local levels. It is also necessary to involve public organizations in environmental protection - these are our active assistants. It is necessary to return prestige and strength to the environmental movement, and promptly respond to the facts of harm to the environment," Azarov concluded.
