Midwives in New Zealand are outraged by the cover of a popular North and South magazine. It shows a hand holding a baby upside down, and the brightly coloured words "midwives".
New Zealand College of Midwives consultant Norma Campbell called the message of the publication "dangerous". A large number of midwives found the cover disgusting and felt it "put them in a bad light".
The magazine's editor, Virginia Larson, says the reaction is over the top. The college is simply attacking the publication to distract from the urgent story the cover illustrates about the realities of midwifery in the country.
The twelve-page article raises some very real issues that deserve serious discussion.
A spokesperson for the College of Midwives said Norma Campbell would not be commenting on the situation and would not be discussing the contents of this article in the near future.
