A long experiment, conducted by world scientists, showed: myoma during pregnancy is not dangerous.
The researchers published the results of their experiment in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The leading doctor-gynecologist at the Medical Center at Vanderbilt University (Tenn.), Catherine Hartmann, says: myoma does not increase the risk of miscarriage.
"We found that pregnant patients diagnosed with uterine fibroids are not at risk for developing a spontaneous abortion. The degree of risk for the gestation process and for the fetus was the same as in healthy future mothers without a corresponding diagnosis. Considering a number of other risk factors, we have come to this discovery, "the doctor-gynecologist comments.
Myoma is a common benign tumor in the uterus. It can modify the boundaries of the body, which for a long time was considered the main factor of spontaneous abortions in pregnant women.
According to statistics, such a tumor is quite widespread. For example, in older women, fibromyoma is diagnosed in 25% of cases.
Five years ago, more than 170 million patients with myoma were registered in the world medicine. And in the United States, this tumor is considered the main cause of surgery for uterine resection.
"We can voice the good news that is expected to hear several million women. The results of our study put an end to the previously existing assumptions: this will significantly reduce the frequency of inappropriate surgical interventions, "the author of the project says.
This is a ten-year study, in which almost six thousand women took part - women from three American states, from different age and race groups. 11% of women had a diagnosis of fibroids, the other patients had no such diagnosis.
The results of the study showed that the risk of spontaneous miscarriage was present in 11% of cases - both in the first group and in the second.
"The main achievement we believe is the fact that there is no connection between the tumor and miscarriage. But, I must confess, at the very beginning of the experiment we pursued a completely different goal. We were sure that there was such a connection, and wanted to determine which species of myoma is the maximum danger. As a result, our opinion has changed radically, "the doctor explains.
Why was the myoma considered a major factor in miscarriage? The fact is that earlier in the experiments did not take into account the age and race belonging of pregnant women. Although it has long been known that at an older age, as well as in representatives of the Negroid race, the percentage of miscarriages is increased.
Now scientists are sure: myoma and pregnancy are compatible.
"Every year at least one million spontaneous abortions are registered in American clinics. Miscarriages are a very common phenomenon, but little is known about the causes of this phenomenon. Of course, any doctor who faces problems with the patient during pregnancy tries to be reinsured. But from today on, pregnant women with a diagnosis of "myoma" do not need such reinsurance, "the expert concludes.
