Too many teenagers and young adults in the UK don't know how most food is made
Call them stupid, uneducated or out of this world, but one thing is clear - too many teenagers and young adults in the UK do not know how most food is produced. These findings were found in a recent survey by LEAF, a UK-based environmental and farming charity.
In a survey of 2,000 consumers, they were asked to associate images of food with the animal or crop from which the food was produced. Although 43% of young consumers aged 16 to 23 considered themselves knowledgeable about food production, this group of young people showed the greatest lack of knowledge about food production.
"We often hear that our knowledge of food production is declining, but this new research shows just how bad the situation really is," says Caroline Drummond, chief executive of LEAF.
Less than half of this younger generation of consumers know that butter is made from milk, and that milk comes from dairy cows. Among adults, 58 percent know how butter is made, but about 2 percent are adamant that butter comes from pigs or chickens.
Only 40 percent of young people were able to associate milk with a cow. Even more shocking, about 7 percent associated milk production with wheat.
Other interesting findings from the study:
- 33% of respondents did not know that eggs are produced by chickens, 11% said that eggs are made from wheat or corn flour
- 36% did not know that bacon is made from pigs
- One in 10 respondents thought that new potatoes grow in less than a month
- Every fifth person stated that jam is made from grain crops
- Young people are confident that beef cows exist for more than just beef production, 68% said they produce milk for human consumption, and another 1% of respondents said beef cows lay eggs.
