The new year 2016 may become significant for science and medicine, since this year will be the year when the trials of a unique anti-aging drug will begin. According to experts, if the drug shows the same amazing results on people as in the case of animals, this will be a huge leap forward for medicine. The new drug will allow a person to live an average of 115 years, while feeling quite normal throughout their entire life.
Scottish professor Gordon Lithgow has been studying the aging process of the human body for over 20 years. According to the professor, earlier talk about stopping the aging process was considered science fiction, but today there is every reason to believe that it is quite possible to influence the biological processes of the body. A quarter of a century ago, scientists could not explain why people age, why they develop "age-related" diseases, etc., but today it is no longer a secret for science what processes occur in the human body during life.
According to Lithgow, if a person learns to slow down the aging process, then almost all diseases caused by age-related changes can be stopped. The professor is sure that the rapid technological process will contribute to the development of a cure for old age, because today the aging of the body is not a mystery, but a task that scientists must certainly solve.
The new anti-aging drug is based on Metformin. Today, this drug is widely used to reduce blood sugar levels.
The new project is called "Metformin for Old Age", it will start in 2016 and is currently actively raising funds for clinical trials. The scientific group is also selecting volunteers aged 70-80 who are predisposed to various diseases (heart attack, senile dementia, cancer, etc.). According to preliminary forecasts, the trials of the new drug will last about 7 years.
As already mentioned, a unique anti-aging drug has been created based on Metformin, which has already been tested on laboratory animals. The first studies were conducted on young roundworms, and it was found that thanks to the drug, the worms not only slowed down the aging process, but also had much better health, compared to worms that did not receive the drug.
Experiments on rodents showed that life expectancy increased by about 40%, while the mice taking the drug had stronger bones.
Scientists noted that the new drug does not act on individual diseases, but on the overall aging process of the body.
If the Metaformin for Old Age project is successful, then the average life expectancy of people on the planet could increase by 50%, but in addition, the drug will help you feel younger (according to the researchers, at 70 years old a person will feel 20-25).
Thus, thanks to the new drug, doctors will not have to treat individual diseases such as diabetes, cancer, senile dementia. At certain indicators, a person will be prescribed a drug for old age, which will directly affect the biological processes of the body, thereby eliminating a number of "age-related" diseases.
