The team of scientists from the Wisconsin Medical College, under the direction of the professor of cell biology and neurology Carol Everson, found that chronic lack of sleep can cause serious malfunctions in the work of the bone marrow and affect the condition of the bones. The results of the work of scientists are published in the September issue of the journal Experimental Biology and Medicine.
Specialists examined rats with a lack of sleep, and found in the serum of their blood violations of markers of bone metabolism. The balance between the growth of bones and the reduction of bone cells was disturbed.
Researchers have revealed in rodents the development of bone tissue - osteogenesis - in the processes of formation and resorption of bone tissue, a sharp disparity was observed.
It was also possible to establish that the amount of fat in the red bone marrow decreased significantly, but the number of cells that generated platelets increased significantly.
These changes indicate changes in the plasticity of the bone marrow.
"Such changes have far-reaching consequences: starting with the risk of osteoporosis and ending with a deterioration in resistance to various diseases, which may be caused by modifications in progenitor cells," Professor Everson comments.
"Life does not get easier with age, it's understandable. People are busy at work, a frantic schedule and financial difficulties affect our health. This is the reason for lack of sleep. Many people think that it's okay that they sleep inadequate amount of time: I will not be able to sleep today, I'll fall asleep later. But this is not so, because in our body irreversible processes occur that negatively affect our health, - says Dr. Everson. - Sleep deprivation affects the processes of bone formation in rats, if these processes are confirmed in people, then lack of sleep can threaten with rather dangerous consequences, up to the point that the human body can not resist disease. Thus, we found out that a lack of normal rest leads to an early deterioration of the body and a weakening of the immune system "
Studies of specialists from different countries showed that lack of sleep can provoke a set of excess weight and cause the early development of Alzheimer's disease. In addition, a bad, disturbing sleep indicates an increased threat of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
