Scientists from Chile (Santiago) seriously engaged in the development of a new vaccine against alcoholism. Doctors are concerned that every year the number of people who drink alcohol daily increases. The drug, which is currently being developed by Santiago, is designed to simulate a hangover syndrome after a minimal amount of ingested alcohol. The idea of creating a drug aimed at combating alcoholism arose after the data on the reaction to alcohol in the inhabitants of the Far East were voiced.
It became known that a fairly large number of residents of Korea, Japan, China lacks a gene that is responsible for the processing of alcohol in the body. Based on this, more than 25 percent of the population of the above countries do not drink alcohol. Medics from Chile are concerned about the health status of local residents, since sociological studies show a rapid annual increase in the number of people who consume alcohol systematically.
In a few months, Chilean scientists are planning to begin experiments with the newly invented vaccine. Initially, the vaccine is going to be tested on laboratory rodents, and only then on volunteer patients from several drug treatment clinics in the country.
Scientists inform that according to preliminary data after vaccination a person will not have an aversion to alcohol at the visual level, the vaccinated patient will be able to look at alcohol, talk about it without visible changes for consciousness. But only one sip of even a weak alcoholic drink will lead to the symptoms of a heavy hangover, which is familiar to anyone who has had time to become addicted to alcohol. Such a reaction of the body is due to the fact that the vaccination causes a slowing of the liver and blocks the synthesis of the enzyme, which has the property of processing alcohol. Immediately after drinking alcohol, the vaccinated person begins vomiting, severe nausea, frequent palpitations, general weakness and malaise.
After carrying out experiments on animals and determining a safe dose for life, studies will be conducted on patients with different stages of alcoholism. With the successful completion of the experiment, scientists argue that the drug will be very popular in countries in Asia and Europe, where the number of alcohol addicts is growing every day. According to the forecasts of specialists, the drug will be released to the pharmaceutical market in two years, and the Ministry of Health of India has previously agreed on the purchase of a vaccine for the entire adult population of the country.
The main advantage of this drug is that its effect can not be neutralized and after vaccination for 6-12 months, the body's reaction to alcohol will be the same: severe discomfort, symptomatic identical to hangover syndrome. Scientists say that the duration of the vaccine should be enough to cure a patient who suffers alcoholism, for six months of life without alcohol a man gets used to a new way of life.
