Scientists have found that the risk of serious diseases during pregnancy, such as pre-eclampsia, diabetes and premature birth, can be reduced even in overweight and obese women with a healthy diet.
It is known that about 40% of women in America and Europe during pregnancy gain weight. Physicians call pregnancy the ideal time to correct weight, since pregnant women are more motivated to change the diet in favor of the child.
Dr. Shakil Tangaratina from the University of Queen Mary in London estimated the effect of diet, exercise on weight gain during pregnancy. He also identified factors of adverse effects on the maternal and fetal organism based on data from 7,000 women who participated in 44 randomized controlled trials.
It turned out that measures to contain weight gain during pregnancy proved to be effective, and due to the diet, women on average lost almost 4 kg compared to physical exercises, which reduced body weight by only 0.7 kg. Diet in combination with physical exertion allowed to lose only 1 kg. The diet was the most effective method for preventing complications of pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and premature birth. Although researchers emphasize the fact that the probability of such influence remains low and requires confirmation.
