Most people who are overweight try to lose weight as quickly as possible, however, a new study by scientists shows that full people live longer than slender and fit. Therefore, if you collect a couple of extra pounds for New Year's and Christmas holidays, this is not a cause for concern, but a way to longevity.
A new large-scale study of specialists, the results of which are published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, is based on an analysis of hundreds of previous studies by scientists.
We are used to hearing that obese people are more at risk of developing various diseases, for example, diseases associated with the cardiovascular system, diabetes, arthritis and so on. However, being lean is much more dangerous than plump. Scientists say that full people have advantages in the duration and quality of life compared to those people whose weight is within the limits that are considered normal.
"Despite the fact that extra pounds increase the risk of developing a number of diseases, they can play a positive role in old age," the researchers commented. "Superfluous fat reserves help to keep people healthy in old age, in case the disease suddenly provokes a significant loss of body weight."
The authors of the work say that if the fat people lose weight due to their illness due to their fat deposits, then the skin organs are involved in this process.
Nevertheless, scientists note that this applies only to people with a slight excess of body weight. Those people who have serious weight problems and are obese do not fall into this category.
In addition, scientists are working on another version. It is based on the fact that full people carefully monitor their health in order not to get better, and therefore, often visit gyms and control their food, avoiding fatty foods and quenching bouts of hunger on time. Thin people, who are not preoccupied with excess weight problems, according to scientists, are not so picky in food and less engaged in sports. Also, experts note that full people are more attentive to their health and to symptoms of illnesses, for example, to high blood pressure. This means that they will take care of their health before, and without delay, seek medical help.
Scientists have analyzed more than ninety studies related to this issue, in which millions of women and men took part. Experts evaluated the ratio of weight and height of subjects (body mass index), as well as their health status.
The body mass index for people with a normal physique is 18.5 - 24.9. Overweight is 25 - 29.9, and obesity is called BMI, which exceeds the mark of 30.
As a result, scientists came to the conclusion that people with overweight live six percent longer than those who fall into the category of "normal". But in addition, it turned out that the life expectancy of those people whose weight is within 30 - 34.9, roughly equal to the life expectancy of slender people, but for those who weigh more, the risk of premature death increases dramatically.
