Scientists from the University of Western Ontario, located in the city of London, Ontario, Canada, said that eating egg yolks is as harmful to heart health as smoking (by two-thirds).

Egg yolk is as harmful to heart health as smoking

According to them, he leads to atherosclerosis - a chronic disease characterized by the defeat of the arteries, in which there is a focal lipid deposition in the walls of arteries of medium and large caliber (the so-called atherosclerotic plaques, with the rupture of which in 80-90% of cases is associated with the occurrence of a heart attack and stroke) .

A team of specialists monitored the health status of more than 1,200 men and women attending centers for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The average age of the patients was 61.5 years. Using ultrasound, experts measured the volume of arterial plaques. All subjects were questioned about their lifestyle (eating habits, smoking, etc.). As a result, it turned out that after 40 years the area covered by plaques of the carotid artery increased, but it was within the norm. Dangerous expansion of the affected area was noted with regular human smoking and eating of egg yolks.

The study also showed that those whose diet contained three or more yolks per week had significantly more arterial plaques compared to people who consumed less yolks. "Egg yolks contain large amounts of cholesterol, and active use of it increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (EEC) .Eggs can not be called a useful product, because yolks accelerate the process of depositing cholesterol plaques," says Dr. David Spence.

According to D. Spence, this effect does not depend on the sex of a person, the cholesterol index, blood pressure, body mass index, the presence of diabetes. The author stated the need for an additional study and stressed that people who are part of the high-risk group of the KHP should avoid regular consumption of egg yolk.
