The ecological situation on our planet has significantly worsened over the last sixty years. A major role in this is played by chemical, bacteriological and, for the most part, nuclear weapons tests conducted around the world. The accident that occurred in Chernobyl in 1986 had a colossal impact on the ecology not only in European countries, but also throughout the world. The ecology suffered to a greater extent in such countries as Ukraine, Belarus, and some parts of Russia. The amount of hazardous substances released into the atmosphere during the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is 500 million curies, which is 500 times more than was released into the atmosphere during the explosion in Hiroshima.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident resulted in the deaths of more than 120,000 people who were exposed to direct or indirect radiation.

It is a proven fact that 80% of all oncological diseases are environmental cancer. The particularly severe consequences of the Chernobyl accident will manifest themselves in the 3rd – 4th generation and at the moment scientists assume that Ukrainians will face an epidemic of cancer diseases.

But not only Chernobyl affected the ecological situation in the country, the burial of radioactive waste and a considerable number of functioning nuclear power plants also contributed. Accidental leaks and various emissions from nuclear facilities, which are considered the norm, lead not only in our country but also throughout the world to congenital pathologies, frequent deaths in infancy, developmental delays, premature births, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, allergic reactions, diabetes, malignant tumors, etc.

In Ukraine, 290 underground sources are polluted, 70% of samples taken from water bodies located on the surface of the earth showed significant non-compliance with accepted standards, and significant. In more than a thousand cities and villages in Ukraine, local water cannot be used for drinking and cooking. Moreover, water from wells located near large cities is completely unsuitable for consumption.

As a result, 70% of water in reservoirs in Ukraine is not suitable for drinking and cooking. The cleanest water is in the western regions of Ukraine, and the most polluted is in the east, south, and partly in the center of the country. All this is due to the industrial concentration of facilities in the southeast, the polluted Dnieper, into which a huge mass of waste and harmful substances is dumped. The main cause of pollution of reservoirs on the surface of the earth is the dumping of untreated waste by industrial enterprises. In Ukraine, on average, up to 35% of all discharges go directly into reservoirs. Mykolaiv region is the leader in discharges of untreated waste into reservoirs, here enterprises dump 100% of polluted water, in second place is Dnipropetrovsk region - 65%, Donetsk is the last, 55% of all waste is dumped here.

Nowadays, people are faced with acute problems concerning the ecology of not only a certain country, but the entire planet, and these problems require immediate action. Among them are industrial emissions polluting the atmosphere, acid rain, global warming that leads to a rise in the level of the World Ocean, ozone holes, the loss of entire ecosystems, deforestation, which results in a decrease in biological diversity in the world.

The main tasks that humanity must solve now are the correction of the development of culture, economy, politics. We must draw conclusions from the mistakes made during development and direct all our efforts to save our Earth from a slow but inevitable death.
