Adult people, whose diet contains dairy products, can reduce arterial stiffness and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, say scientists from the University of South Australia, the University of Maine (USA) and the Australian National University.

Specialists decided to investigate whether the consumption of dairy products is associated with arterial stiffness indicators, including pulse pressure and the speed of the pulse wave propagation along the femoral carotid artery. To this end, data were analyzed on 600 participants in the large-scale study of the Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Study, which began in 1975 and lasted 35 years.

It was found that the speed of pulse wave propagation, pulse pressure and systolic blood pressure are reduced along with the increase in the consumption of dairy products, regardless of demographic and dietary variables and other risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases. The lowest rate of spreading of the pulse wave was recorded in those who had milk and products from it on the table daily or up to six times a week.

The researchers did not find a link between the consumption of dairy products and the level of lipids. It was not possible to determine which milk product - milk, cheese, yogurt and dairy desserts, cream or ice cream - effectively reduces the speed of the pulse wave. Scientists intend to conduct a number of works, including clinical trials: it is to be determined whether dairy products can be an acceptable way to prevent age-related arterial stiffness and cardiovascular diseases, and for which groups of patients this method is suitable
